Eagles Hang Tough With Ranked Saints
Elgin, IL — Judson University women's basketball went toe-to-toe with nationally ranked St. Francis (Ill.) on Wednesday evening at the Lindner Fitness Center, battling for four quarters before the Saints pulled away late for a 76–54 final score.
The Eagles showed early resolve against the 18–1 Saints, staying within striking distance through the opening half. Judson trailed just 16–13 after the first quarter and continued to compete defensively, limiting St. Francis to 35 points at the break. A third-quarter push kept Judson in the game, as the Eagles cut into the margin with improved shooting and energy on both ends before St. Francis used a strong fourth quarter to seal the win.
Madison Carlson had 13 points for JU, knocking down a pair of three-pointers and adding two assists. Kendra Brown also finished in double figures with 13 points off the bench, while Callie Kurczek contributed nine points and six rebounds.
Jayda Centeno filled the stat sheet with six points, nine rebounds, and six assists, helping Judson stay competitive against one of the top teams in the NAIA.
Despite being outrebounded by the Saints, Judson forced 10 turnovers and held St. Francis to under 40 percent shooting from the floor. The Eagles' effort and physical play kept the contest within reach deep into the second half before the visitors' depth and experience showed down the stretch.
The Eagles competed well as the final score was not a true indication of the battle. The first meeting between these two teams was a 52 point difference. The return bout was a much more competitive ball game.
Judson will look to build on the strong performance as conference play continues, when they travel to Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon, taking confidence from a gritty showing against a ranked opponent.
