EAGLES STRONG IN TITAN FIRST CHANCE INDOOR MEET
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Two indoor program records broken and four athletes qualified for the NCCAA National Indoor Championships in the opening weekend of competition for the Judson men's and women's indoor track and field teams. The Eagles competed in the Titan First Chance Indoor Meet on Saturday, Dec. 7.
The Eagles sent just a partial squad to Illinois Wesleyan; but came away very pleased with some strong performances.
Junior Jordan Wagner picked up right where she left off just two weeks removed from the NAIA Cross Country National Championships. The junior college transfer broke the previous women's 600 meter dash record with a time of 1:39.63 good for a third place finish in the event.
Women's Throws Group dominated the competition Saturday as Judson placed three athletes in the top eight in each throw. Sophomore thrower Alisha Barnaby took first place in the women's weight throw with a toss of 14.62. With that toss she broke the previous school record while qualifying for the NCCAA National Championships later on this season.
Barnaby went on to qualify for the NCCAA National Championships in women's shot put with a second place finish in that event. Sophomore Kilee Hoffman will join Barnaby in the NCCAA National Championships as she came in fourth in the shot put event while junior Jessica Del Re finished sixth in the women's weight throw to qualify for the national championships as well.
First year head coach Joel Popenfoose was extremely pleased with the way his team started the season.
"It was a good start," said the first year coach. "Our athletes prepared well and competed hard and those were goals we wanted to hit in our opener. Most of our athletes performed at or near their indoor bests from last season, and a number of them set personal bests. Our women's throws group was outstanding."
The men's the women's indoor track and field teams will have plenty of time off in preparation for the teams' next indoor meet following the first of the year. The Eagles will head to Whitewater, Wis. for the Kari Schneider Invitational on Jan. 18.
