Eagles Fall Late Against Davenport
Orlando, FL – In a heart-wrenching battle at the USTA National Campus, the Judson University men's tennis team surged to a commanding lead before falling in a narrow 4-3 decision to Davenport University on Thursday morning. The Eagles appeared to be in total control early in the dual, but the Panthers managed a resilient late-match comeback that was decided by the very last points of the day.
The morning began with high energy for Judson as they secured the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead. The top duo of Brayden Kopp and Florian Koppitsch set a physical tone at the No. 1 spot, while Cesar Otondo and Julius Fortun clinched the advantage with a hard-fought 6-4 victory at No. 3 doubles.
Carrying that momentum into singles play, Niel Hentrich provided a massive spark at the No. 6 position, cruising to a dominant 6-2, 6-1 win over Jaiden Karem to put Judson up 2-0. Shortly after, Brayden Kopp extended the lead to a 3-0 cushion at the top of the lineup when his opponent, Adrian Constantin, was forced to retire due to injury with Kopp leading 6-3, 2-1.
With the Eagles just one point away from clinching the dual, Davenport began a steady push through the middle of the lineup. The Panthers picked up a win at the No. 3 position and followed it with a three-set victory over Cesar Otondo at No. 5 singles.
At the No. 4 spot, Florian Koppitsch took the opening set 7-5, but his opponent rallied to take the next two sets 6-3, 6-3, leveling the overall team score at 3-3 and leaving the entire dual to be decided at the No. 2 position.
In the final match on court, Nicolas Donoso was locked in a grueling marathon against Dan Calver. After dropping the first set 1-6, Donoso showed incredible resolve to battle back and take the second set 7-5, forcing a high-stakes Champions Tiebreak to decide the winner of the dual.
With both teams gathered at the fence, the tiebreak went back and forth, but Calver managed to edge out the final points to secure the 10-6 victory and the overall match for Davenport.
Throughout the entire morning, the Eagles competed exceptionally well and proved they can match the intensity of a deep Panthers lineup point-for-point
