Eagles Win Barnburner To Start Spring Trip
Orlando, FL - The Judson University men's tennis team demonstrated elite composure and conditioning on Wednesday morning, overcoming a weather-related schedule shift to secure a gritty 4-3 victory over Ave Maria University.
Originally slated for Tuesday afternoon, the match was pushed to a prompt 8:00 a.m. start at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, following a significant rainout. Despite the early hour and the quick turnaround, the Eagles took control of the courts immediately and held the lead for the vast majority of the dual, eventually clinching the win through a series of high-stakes doubles and singles performances.
The morning began with a dominant display in doubles play, where Judson completed a clean sweep of all three positions to set a powerful tone for the day. At the No. 1 spot, Brayden Kopp and Florian Koppitsch fought through a grueling set to earn a 7-6 victory, punctuated by a 7-5 tiebreaker.
The momentum continued at the No. 2 position, where Nicolas Donoso and Cesar Otondo Villafan played a clinical and disciplined match to secure a 6-4 win. Completing the sweep at the No. 3 flight, Joshua Bavich and Brock Dawson displayed excellent chemistry to outlast their opponents in another 7-6 battle, mirroring the 7-5 tiebreaker score of the top flight.
This collective effort provided the Eagles with a crucial 1-0 lead heading into the singles portion of the contest.
In singles, the Eagles maintained their upper hand, led by an efficient performance from Florian Koppitsch at the No. 6 position. Koppitsch was in total control from the first serve, dismantling Julien Mourad with a 6-1, 6-2 victory that extended the Judson lead. While Julius Fortun fought through a tough assignment at the No. 5 spot before falling 2-6, 4-6, and Nicolas Donoso pushed his opponent to a second-set tiebreaker in a 1-6, 6-7 defeat at No. 4, the top of the Judson lineup proved to be impenetrable.
The match was ultimately decided by three-set marathons at the top three flights. At the No. 3 spot, Javier Sanchez authored a stunning comeback; after dropping a 6-7 opening set, he swept the second 6-0 and outlasted Danil Mishchanin in a 13-11 tiebreak. Josh Bavich followed a similar path at No. 2, recovering from a 2-6 first set to win the second 6-4 and falling just short in the deciding match tiebreak 7-10. The victory was punctuated at the No. 1 flight by Brayden Kopp, who took the final third set tiebreaker 10-2, after splitting sets against Joao Almeida.
This 4-3 triumph serves as a major highlight for the program as they continue their spring break campaign in Florida.
The Eagles will be back in action this afternoon, when they take on D1 competition, facing North Carolina A&T at the USTA National Campus.
