Eagles Compete In Home Opener
Crystal Lake, IL - The Judson University men's tennis team officially opened their home season with a hard-fought contest against a deep Quincy University squad.
While the visitors took control early by sweeping the doubles point with 6-2 victories across all three courts, the Eagles showed significant resilience as the match moved into singles play.
The highlight of the afternoon for the Judson faithful was a tenacious performance from Javier Sanchez at the No. 3 singles position. After dropping a tight first set 3-6, Sanchez battled back to take the second 6-4 and eventually outlasted Cristobal Cervera in a marathon 11-9 super-tiebreaker to secure a hard-earned point for the Eagles.
The middle of the lineup saw several other close calls for Judson, including a strong start from Luca Zandboer at No. 5 singles, who dominated his opening set 6-1 before falling in a narrow 6-10 tiebreaker in the third.
Joshua Bavich also pushed his opponent at the No. 4 spot, nearly taking the opening frame in a 6-7, 4-6 decision. At the top of the lineup, Brayden Kopp and Nicolas Donoso faced tough challenges, with Kopp falling 2-6, 2-6 and Donoso dropping a 2-6, 1-6 result.
In the final match of the day, Florian Koppitsch was locked in a back-and-forth battle at the No. 6 spot, trailing 4-6, 2-5 when the match concluded. Although the final scoreline favored the Hawks, the Eagles demonstrated the competitive edge needed as they prepare for a high-profile stretch of tennis.
The team now turns its attention toward a massive week of competition at the USTA National Campus during Spring Break, where they will open play against Ave Maria on March 3rd.
