Judson Tennis Shines at ITA Regional Championships
Marion, IN - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) hosts a series of regional tennis tournaments, which is the capstone event for the fall tennis season.
Before the sun rose on Wednesday morning, Judson's tennis players loaded up in the school van and headed to Notre Dame's tennis courts in South Bend Indiana where Holy Cross University hosted the ITA small college regional tournament.
Fueled by Dunkin Donuts and unwavering determination, the Judson's men's tennis team won every first-round match.
Joshua Bavich (Judson University) had the first scheduled match and took the court first against Conor Pacelli. Connor jumped out to an early lead by taking the 1st set 6-3. Josh shook off the first set and came charging back to take the second set 6 – 3 and finished the super tie breaker 10-4.
While Josh was a couple games into the first set, saddled with his tennis bag and a fresh set of balls, Chadd Kerrigan started his match against Brian Victoria Ayala. Chadd came out of the first set tie breaker victorious and made quick work of his opponent in the second set, winning it 6-2.
Judson senior, Moosa Choudhary faced off against Danijel Blagojevic. Moosa edged out Danijel in the first set 6- 4 and never let up. He cruised to a 6-0 victory in the second set.
Judson senior, Alexandre Veltkamp took an impressive 11 games in a row against his first opponent and won the match 6-1, 6-0. While Alex was on the court, Nicolas Donoso embarked on his 3 set victory against his opponent.....
In the second round of matches, Alexandre Veltkamp and Chadd Kerrigan made quick work of their opponents by winning a combined 24 games and only allowing their opponents to take 4 games. Chadd and Alex advanced to the round of 16.
Alex Veltkamp handily defeated his opponent in the round of 16 and advanced to the tournament semi-finals. The semi-final match was a marathon match that was impressive to observe. Alex laid everything on the court, but ultimately his opponent took the match and advanced to the finals.
Coach Dehaan was exceptionally proud of the character and performance of entire team. They represented Judson University with poise and excellence. With a strong showing at the regional tournament, the tennis team looks ahead with great anticipation for the spring season.
