Eagles Take Opener Versus St. Xavier
Elgin, IL – Judson delivered a strong all-around performance on Tuesday morning, riding a dominant outing on the mound and timely hitting to secure a 3-1 victory over Saint Xavier at Hoffer Field.
These first two games of this four game series were make up games from a postponement last week. The Eagles certainly got a quality start out of it as Jacob Skinner went the distance in the victory.
The Eagles improved to 20-7 overall and 8-1 in conference play, continuing their strong run through the league.
Judson broke through in the sixth inning after a scoreless battle early on. Kyle Schwartz sparked the rally with a double and later came home on an RBI double from Allan Navarro, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
The offense added insurance in the seventh. After loading the bases, Blake Stempowski drew a walk to bring in a run, and Schwartz delivered again with an RBI single to extend the lead to 3-0.
On the mound, Jacob Skinner was outstanding. The right-hander tossed a complete game, allowing just one run on three hits while working around four walks. Skinner kept Saint Xavier off balance all day, inducing 15 groundouts and shutting the door over the final innings.
Saint Xavier managed its lone run in the eighth inning, but Skinner responded by retiring the side in order in the ninth to seal the win.
Offensively, Judson tallied 10 hits, led by Schwartz's 3-hit performance, while Stempowski and Navarro each drove in key runs.
The Eagles did drop game two of the double header 8-5.
Over the weekend, JU will take on Olivet Nazarene in a four game series.
