CCAC Regular Season Champions l CCAC Tournament Champions

The 2007-08 season marked a year of firsts for the Judson men's basketball team. It was the first time for Judson to win the CCAC regular season and tournament championships along with advancing to the NAIA Division II Tournament. It was also the first time that Judson has had a CCAC "Player of the Year."

With a 10-2 regular season CCAC record, Judson won their first-ever CCAC championship. It came down to the final regular season game against Trinity Christian in Palos Heights, Ill., as Judson took the championship with a 78-69 win. Judson had started off the conference with a 7-0 record before dropping two straight CCAC contests. They then regrouped and won their final three CCAC games for the championship.

The CCAC Tournament Championship was just as hard as Judson had a bull's-eye on their back due to winning the regular season. In the semi-final game, Judson held off a surging Calumet College team, 92-91, in the Lindner Fitness Center moving onto the championship game. Judson had to face Cardinal Stritch, who gave the Eagles one of their two CCAC losses, but had home court advantage. In their third meeting of the season, Judson cruised to a 97-79 win for their first-ever CCAC Tournament Championship.

By winning the CCAC Tournament Championship, Judson received the automatic bid to the NAIA Division II National Tournament in Missouri. This was a first for Judson as the last national tournament that they went to was the NCCAA in 1983. Judson drew #4 Walsh University and fell to the Cavaliers in the first round.

Named to the NAIA All-American Third-Team, Dewayne Robinson became the fourth Judson player to be named NAIA All-American. His third-team status is the best, ever, for a Judson player.

Senior Justen Boyd claimed the NAIA Champions of Character award for his play both on and off the field. He received the award at the NAIA National Tournament in Missouri.

With such a season, Judson claimed a lot of post-season awards. One of them was the CCAC Player of the Year in Dewayne Robinson. This, again, was a first for the program. Robinson led the CCAC in scoring at 21.1 points per game and was named the CCAC Player of the Week three times. He was also named to the All-CCAC First-Team.

In his final year as the head men's basketball coach, Jim Cook went out in style by gaining the CCAC Coach of the Year. He guided Judson to their finest year, ever, with a 10-2 CCAC record and won both the regular season and tournament championships. He also had four players named All-CCAC and the CCAC Player of the Year.

Four players were named to the All-CCAC teams with three being first-team. Dewayne Robinson, Ilija Bojanic, and Justen Boyd were all named to the All-CCAC First-Team while Joe Gonnam was an All-CCAC Honorable Mention selection.

Three players were awarded CCAC Player of the Week for five different weeks. Robinson claimed three of the five weeks while Boyd and Bojanic each received the award, too.

Dewayne Robinson was named to the NCCAA All-American First-Team for his performance. He led the NCCAA in scoring for most of the season and finished second. He was also named National Player of the Week, once. In the statistical categories, he finished 14th in field goal percentage and 15th in steals per game.

Three players earned the NCCAA National Player of the Week award for Judson. Dewayne Robinson, Ilija Bojanic, and Justen Boyd each picked up the award for their play.

In the North Central Region, Judson had three players earn awards. Dewayne Robinson and Ilija Bojanic were named to the first-team while Justen Boyd was on the honorable mention team.

Several Judson players were ranked in different categories for the CCAC. Dewayne Robinson led the way as he was in seven different categories. Robinson led the CCAC in scoring, second in three-point field goal percentage, third in steals, fourth in field goal percentage, fifth in assists, sixth in rebounding, and ninth in free throw percentage.

Justen Boyd led the CCAC in assists, was second in field goal percentage and assist/turnover ratio, 14th in scoring and steals, and 15th in free throw percentage.

Ilija Bojanic finished fourth in rebounding, sixth in scoring and blocked shots, 11th in steals, 13th in free throw percentage and three-point field goal percentage, and 14th in assists.

Chris Oates was fourth in blocked shots, fifth in three-point field goal percentage, sixth in field goal percentage, ninth in rebounding, and 12th in scoring.

Steffan Williams was fifth in free throw percentage, sixth in three-point field goal percentage, 11th in assists, and 17th in scoring.

Joe Gonnam finished fifth in rebounding and steals, ninth in blocked shots, 10th in field goal percentage, and 25th in scoring.

By winning the regular season championship, Judson completed a worst-to-first turnaround in one season. Last year, JU finished 6-23 overall and were 1-9 in the CCAC. JU opened the 2007-08 CCAC season with a 7-0 record and completed the first-round of play undefeated before finishing with a 10-2 record. Last year, JU only defeated Calumet College for their lone CCAC win.

By averaging 21.1 points per game, Dewayne Robinson finished 10th in the nation in scoring.   Justen Boyd finished 21st in the nation for assists at 4.71 per game.

By winning seven games in a row to start off the CCAC season, Judson broke the school record for consecutive wins. Judson started the win streak with a 102-71 win over Purdue-North Central. They then went on to defeat, Cardinal Stritch, Purdue-Calumet, Trinity International, Calumet College, Trinity Christian, and then broke the record vs. Purdue-North Central starting the second round of play in the CCAC. The streak came to an end with a 100-97 double overtime loss to Cardinal Stritch in Wisconsin. Judson then fell to Purdue-Calumet but then won their next five games before falling to #4 Walsh in the NAIA Tournament.

The 2007-08 season marked the final season for Jim Cook as both the men's and women's basketball coach. In the 2008-09 season, he will just be the women's basketball coach. In his final season as the men's coach, he finished 19-9 and guided Judson to their finest season ever. He finishes his men's basketball career with a 52-66 record.

Replacing Jim Cook as the head coach will be Tony Tompkins. Tompkins was the associate head coach in the 2007-08 season and helped with Judson's best season, ever. Tompkins comes to Judson after being at Missouri Baptist for five seasons and has a 110-47 overall record. He was named the AMC Coach of the Year, twice, and guided MBU to two NAIA Division I Tournament appearances and won two AMC regular season championships and one AMC Tournament Championship. He also had 14 All-AMC selections and four NAIA All-Americans.

Judson had five seniors with three playing for Judson all four seasons. Justen Boyd, Chris Oates, and Joe Gonnam were a part of the program all four years while Steffan Williams and Ilija Bojanic played for two years. Boyd, Gonnam, and Oates are all in the Judson record books for their play.

Justen Boyd finished second in assists (500), fifth in games played (118), eighth in free throws attempted (441) and assists per game (4.2), ninth in points (1,399), steals (133) and field goals attempted (1054), and 10th in field goals made (537).

Joe Gonnam is eighth in blocked shots (67) and 12th in games played (111). Chris Oates finished fourth in blocks (82).

In unique fashion, Judson sported four players in one season that each had over 1,000 career points. Justen Boyd came into the season with more than 1,000 points but Dewayne Robinson, Joe Gonnam, and Chris Oates all reached the mark during the season. Robinson passed the 1,000 point mark early in the season while Gonnam and Oates came at the end of the season. Robinson is currently eighth all-time in scoring with 1,422 points while Boyd finished at ninth with 1,399. Gonnam became the 24th player to reach 1,000 points finishing with 1,064 while Oates was the 25th player and finished with 1,029.

Three times in the 2007-08 season Judson received votes in the national poll. After being in the poll two weeks in a row at the end of January, they fell out due to two consecutive losses. With a win over Trinity Christian, who was receiving votes at the time, to end the regular season, Judson jumped back into the national poll with eight votes. The most they had this season was 26 votes at the end of January.
