WOODY SMITH '73

A four-year standout for both the men’s soccer and baseball teams, Forest “Woody” Smith is a 1973 graduate. Smith excelled in both sports as a player, and then went on to coach each of the sports for three years. A three-time NIIC All-Conference selection, Smith led his soccer team in either goals or assists all four seasons. He was named team Most Valuable Player three times and captained his team three times. Smith finished his career with 49 goals which ranks 10th all-time for the program. He is the only player still ranked in a career statistical category who played before 1980. As the men’s soccer coach, Smith had winning records in all three of his seasons. On the baseball field, Smith was a two-time NIIC All-Conference selection, and also earned team Most Valuable Player honors. He was the team leader in walks and stolen bases almost every year. His base-on-balls totals for each of his four seasons still all rank in the top-10 for a single-season. He finished his career with 83 walks and 36 stolen bases, both the all-time career highs for the program. Smith also holds the single-season game records with five stolen bases and five walks in a game.
