“I started going to their games and I remember getting really excited to get out there myself,” says Friestad. “While they were at school, I remember going into their rooms and trying on their uniforms.”
Now, as a co-captain and fourth-year player on the Judson Eagles women’s basketball team, this point guard can look back and see where she’s been and how she got there. Throughout her years in basketball she’s learned of three things that keep her enthused about the sport: other players and her family, a simple passion for the sport, and God.
“It’s fun…,” said Friestad, “and especially now when my career is almost over I look back and remember how good it’s been. It’s also been for God. He’s really blessed me in that I’ve only had one injury throughout my time in the sport. Actually, my favorite verse is Colossians 3:23. ‘Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart as working for the Lord, not for men.’ It’s just like a huge inspiration because we’re supposed to use the talents God’s given us. For me, growing up, I would always watch players and now that when I’m grown up I want to be able to inspire or be a good example for other players as well. My family, too, they’ve always been so supportive. I don’t think my family missed one home game this year.”
All the hard work and passion paid off over her 18 years in the sport: in experiences, life lessons, and relationships. Specific instances like the Conference Tournament Championship game will stick with her forever.
“One thing I can definitely remember was my sophomore year when we went to the Conference Tournament Championship at Cardinal Stritch. They’d beaten us twice already so we were at their place,” said Friestad. “We were down two at half, and then the second half we just came out with a ton of energy and very good defense. We had a 17 - point lead at one point and held on to win , so that allowed us to go to the national tournament. Just like at the end of any big game, everyone ran out in the middle. It was just exciting, everyone was so happy. There was just that satisfaction of a goal accomplished through hard work.”
Being an integral part of a team teaches lessons not learned in the classroom. As a unit, a team works together towards a goal. As an individual, each player strives to be the best person they can.
Being part of a team brings with it more unexpected gifts than most players could ever imagine. Though lessons can sometimes come through difficult circumstances, Friestad believes it all boils down to an incredible life experience to look back on and smile.
“In women’s basketball here at Judson you need to be committed, have fun, work hard, and love your teammates. You learn a lot, not just about basketball, but about life.”
