"Sports, I have heard, are the other half of an education," explains Judson freshman, Adam Westhauser. "[They] are applied life issues in interpersonal relationships." This Hartford, Wisconsin native learned much in his first year playing Judson University tennis. After 8 years competing in tennis, Adam tells how he realizes every year brings more lessons.

This year's most valuable lesson? "Take one point at a time. Don't lose focus," Westhauser continues, "and don't let your opponent have any advantage on you."

Another aspect Adam has honed in on this past season is the art of technique. "I have gone more in-depth in the study of my strokes…and learning to use my strengths against my opponents," he adds. He also thanks Judson tennis for giving him the opportunity to "learn how to lead a team, support teammates, love ‘enemies' and [learn to cope with] hardships."

Some of the team's spiritual aspects Westhauser appreciates most include the time spent together in prayer, in chapel, and, very often, devotions at practice. He tries to model the call of Philippians 1:27, "Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ." Judson seeks to foster this belief in their athletes and encourage Christ-like character evident in every area of life.

Judson was the clear choice for this 5'11'' freshman. "I had been looking at other small Christian schools, but Judson offered the best opportunities for tennis and other experiences," Adam tells. He loves the atmosphere Judson brings and the close friendships he has built with fellow teammates; "We just have a good time together! [I really enjoy] riding back and forth from meets and singing songs on the radio with the girl's team or stopping at the Golden Corral after a long trip," Westhauser shares. Adam benefits from Judson's belief that in order to excel in a sport, you have to have fun.

In response to the question ‘What impact does Jesus Christ have on you as an experienced athlete?' Adam resolutely says "Faith is a main motivator for me. I have strength and dedication to my team, coaches and myself." He continues, "I have a purpose and reason behind what I do."

Adam sets his sight to follow the Words of Colossians 3:17: "And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." "I know I need to praise God in the wins and losses and then honor my opponent," says Adam.

"…But I don't have to be the nice guy; I can still go out and compete."
