Rachael Dean has been involved in cross country for only four years, but already is hooked. "The thing I like the most is that [cross country] is so challenging and after you are done running, you feel such a sense of accomplishment. You can see how all your hard work pays off." After trying track and dance, Dean realized they didn't work for her the same as cross country.

Dance was a focus for five years, while track consumed all of middle school and freshman year at Lakes High School. Dean states, "I ran long distance track events, so my coach recommended that I run cross country in the fall to help me stay in shape for track in the spring." Little did Rachael know that cross country would trump track in the long run.

Judson was a good fit from the start. Dean was already acquainted with the coach, who had talked to her about helping start a new cross country team. "The first time I came to visit, I knew that this was the right place for me to be," Dean reveals. "I knew that I had the chance to be on a successful cross country team."

Now that she is apart of a successful cross country team, Rachael admits she has an obligation to both school and cross country. The best plan of attack for maintaining order in a chaotic schedule is budgeting her time wisely.

In regards to athletics, Rachael is specifically tested when it comes to moving outside her comfort zone. "Something I find challenging this season is the actual races. They are 6k which is 3.7 miles, and I am used to running just 3 miles. The longer race makes it more difficult," Dean shares.

After becoming saved in second grade, Jesus has taught Rachael much about life through her various experiences. "I am so grateful for his amazing love, forgiveness, and grace," she says. Faith continues to play a part in the personal life of Dean, as do strong role models.

Dean is fortunate enough to have a father that has earned that position in her life. "[My dad] works so hard and does so much for my family." In addition to him, Rachael also credits her best friend and track coach as noteworthy influences: "They both are the most determined and dedicated people I've ever met."

Rachael Dean continues to adjust well and enjoy the atmosphere of Judson University and all it has to give. She, in turn, gives back by using her talents here on Judson campus.
