Assistant Coach- 2nd Season
Entering his first season on Tony Tompkins staff, Joel Cotton brings to Judson a background of NCAA Division I and III experience.  In the past six years, he has made stops at Indiana University-Purdue University-Ft. Wayne (IPFW) and Anderson University. 
 

He started his coaching career at NCAA Division I Indiana University/Purdue-University-Ft. Wayne (IPFW). He was the director of basketball operations for three seasons and the interim assistant coach for one season. When he was the interim assistant coach, he help guide the team to a then school record NCAA Division I 10 wins. IPFW became a certified NCAA Division I program in 2005 after their four-year provisional period.

Moving onto the NCAA Division III level, Cotton then became the assistant coach for the Anderson University men's basketball team. His three seasons there led to success for the team. In 2007-08, the team finished second in the HCAC and then last year they had the longest winning streak at Anderson in 27 years. In the last two years at Anderson, they won 15 games each and had back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in five years.

His efforts in recruiting have been noted at each stop with the players he has brought in. At IPFW, the team won a then school record NCAA Division I 10 games. At Anderson, he recruited two top 40 seniors from the state of Indiana as well as the seventh leading scorer in the junior college ranks in division II.

With his experience at the different coaching levels, he has had the chance to organize and work many basketball camps. He has helped with IPFW, Indiana University, Butler University, Taylor University, and Northern State University basketball camps.
 
Cotton also brings a NCAA Division I experience to Judson as he ran cross country and track and field at Indiana University where he was a four-time academic All-Big Ten selection. In his four years at Indiana, he volunteered at the 2001 Big Ten Track and Field Championships and the 1999 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships.
 
Recently, Cotton was just hired to start the Judson University women's track and field program and take over the women's cross country program.
 
He is married to his wife Jennifer and they reside in Geneva, IL.

Coming off another CCAC Championship, Tompkins is in his third year as head coach and looking to continue the winnings ways he has brought to Judson University. Making an impression in his two seasons, Tompkins has now guided Judson to back-to-back winning seasons for the first time at Judson under one coach since 1969-70 and 1970-71 seasons, Tompkins took over the program in 2008-09 after a year of being the associate head coach under Jim Cook in 2007-08.   
After starting the 2009-10 year off at 1-10, Tompkins' team had one of the best turn arounds in the nation winning 16 of their last 19 games.  In that run, they had a seven-game winning streak and also knocked of #9 Cardinal Stritch University breaking their 27-game winning streak which lead the nation.  With the win over Cardinal Stritch, Judson won their second CCAC Tournament Championship in three years and went to their second NAIA Division II National Tournament. 
 
For the team, he had four players named to the All-CCAC team with two on the first-team.  He also had one player voted onto the NCCAA All-American first-team (Landon Skinner). 
 
At the NAIA National Tournament, Tompkins backed up his program with some respect as Judson was just four minutes away from defeating #2 Oregon Tech.  Judson had a three-point lead with just over four minutes to play in the first round but did not hold on to the lead as they fell to Oregon Tech by six points after being down by as many as 21 points in the first half.
 
Tompkins impact on the team in his first season showed right away as Judson won their second straight CCAC regular season championship in 2009. The season also produced 21 wins, the second most in program history, and a school record nine-game winning streak. On the award front, he had the CCAC Freshman of the Year (Landon Skinner), a NAIA All-American (Landon Skinner), and two NCCAA All-Americans (DeWayne Robinson, Landon Skinner). He also had four players named to All-CCAC teams.
 
As the associate head coach in the 2007-08 season, Tompkins was a part of the staff that guided Judson to their first-ever CCAC regular season and tournament championships along with their first-ever berth in the NAIA Division II National Tournament.
 
Overall, Tompkins has now coached in four NAIA National Tournaments and produced five NAIA All-Americans. He has won five conference championships and 17 players named all-Conference first-team. In seven seasons as a head coach, he has won 20 or more games in five seasons and has a combined record of 148-71 and is 62-20 in conference play.
 
"We are thrilled to have Tony join our staff," said Athletic Director Nancy Smith. "He has a wealth of experience building a program to be nationally competitive. We are very optimistic that he will do great things with our program as well."
 
After being hired in 2002 at Missouri Baptist, Tompkins led his Spartans to two American Midwest Conference titles and two trips to the NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National Tournament. He was a two-time American Midwest Conference Coach of the Year selection (2004 & 2005) and coached four NAIA All Americans. He recorded a 110-47 career record including four 20 win seasons in his five years.
 
Tompkins graduated from Missouri Baptist in 1998 with a Bachelors of Science degree. After graduation, he was a member of the coaching staff at Rock Falls High School (Ill.) for the 1998-99 season that won the Illinois Class A State Championship.
 
Tompkins received his Master's degree from the University of Phoenix in 2003 in Organizational Management.
 
Tompkins is a 1993 graduate of Ohio High School (Ill.) and continued his playing career Olivet Nazarene, Sauk Valley Community College (Ill.), and Missouri Baptist. While playing for Missouri Baptist, he was the captain and the leading scorer both years.
 

Tompkins and his wife, Heidi, have been married for 13 years and have two daughters (Brooke, Haley) and a son (Samuel).
