
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Winning their sixth NCCAA National Championship, Judson University (19-3-1) held off a feisty Indiana Wesleyan (11-11-1), 4-3. This was Judson's ninth appearance in the NCCAA National Championship match as they have now won six which is the most by any NCCAA men's soccer member.The Eagles played a serious sense of pride and honor tonight as they were joined in Florida by President Jerry Cain.
Gustavo Oliveira was named the NCCAA Tournament MVP while Alex Tyton earned the Best Defensive Player award. Rafa Heck was also named to the NCCAA National All-Tournament team.
The scoring for Judson was spread out as four different players scored. Tom Kruse made it 1-0 in the 16th minute as Judson only goal in the first half.
Oliveira put Judson up 2-0 on a penalty kick in the 39th minute but over the next 17 minutes Indiana Wesleyan tied it at two. Mariano Cutali gave Judson the lead on a shot in the 63rd minute and then Rafa Heck put Judson up 4-2 in the 70th minute on a penalty kick due to Kruse getting taken down hard in the box. Indiana Wesleyan came within one goal as they scored in the 72nd minute but then Judson's defense held their own as Indiana Wesleyan played a man down due to a red card.
Judson is now 29-9 in the NCCAA National Tournament and has won eight-straight matches that date through the 2002 and 1999 seasons. Judson has played in 13 NCCAA National Tournaments in Steve Burke's 26 years and has six NCCAA National Championships (2009, 2002, 1997, 1995, 1992, 1991) and three second place finishes (1989, 1993, 1998).
