
ELGIN, Ill. - Clarke College's (1-7) 8-2 run in the final 2:01 of overtime became the difference in the game as they took a 98-93 win away from Judson University (1-8). Judson had a one-point lead, 91-90, with 2:01 left but missed four shots and two free throws in the final 2:01.
Marious Lobdell (Peoria, IL/Illinois Central College) led four Judson players in double figures with 23 points and had five assists. He shot 50% (3-of-6) from beyond the arc. Landon Skinner (Plano, TX/Air Force Academy Prep School) added 17 points, Jim Kuban (Pekin, IL/Illinois Central College) 16 points, and Ben Rayhorn (Dakota, IL/Sauk Valley CC) 11 points. Anthony Ahlers (Magnolia, IL/Putnam County HS) had a career-high 11 rebounds. Clarke's Thomas Ammon led all scorers with 32 points.
The fouling situation did not help Judson at all as there were 75 combined fouls called with 40 on Judson. Judson then only shot 60% (20-of-33) from the free throw line while Clarke shot 62% (28-of-45). Clarke was even on the shooting with Judson hitting 49% of their shots, 44% from three-point land, and 62% from the line. Judson did out rebound Clarke, 40-35, but also turned the ball over 22 times to Clarke's 18.
In the first 10 minutes of the game, Judson jumped out to an 11-point lead, 26-15, with 9:26 left. Lobdell hit one of his three three-pointers to put Judson up by 11. Kuban kept Judson's lead at 10-points, 37-27, with 6:35 left in the half on a three-pointer. He finished the night going 3-of-3 from the arc.
Again, Judson kept their lead over the next four minutes as Michael Wood (Wheaton, IL/College of Dupage) canned his only three-point attempt of the night for a 10-point lead, 46-36. It was at this point that Clarke College came together to change the pace of the game.
Clarke College controlled the final 2:21 of the first half with a 10-2 run to cut Judson's lead to two, 48-46, at the half. Each team shot well as Judson made 57% of their shots and Clarke hit 62%.
Pushing their lead to five, 54-49, in just over two minutes into the second half, Skinner nailed a three-pointer for Judson. Clarke College responded with a 6-1 run in just under three minutes to tie the game at 55. Judson once again put together a 5-0 run in 1:20 as LeStan Hoskins (Danville, IL/Black Hawk College) banked a layup to make it 60-55.
The next 2:41 was the biggest swing of the game as Clarke College took control of the offense. They went on a 14-3 run for a six-point advantage, 69-63, with 10:55 left in the game. Judson fought back diligently with an 8-2 run in two minutes to tie the game at 71. Rayhorn hit a seven-foot jumper that put Judson into the tie. From that point on, there were four ties that ended the game at 84 all.
Judson had their chances for the win in the final 40 seconds as they missed a fast-break layup and then turned the ball over with three seconds left. Judson had control of the ball with 12 seconds left in the game after Clarke College turned the ball over.
Clarke College opened up with a four-point lead in overtime, 88-84, but Judson added a 7-2 run in 1:21 for their one-point lead, 91-90. This was Judson's only lead of the overtime period. Clarke College then finished the final 2:01 on the 8-2 run for the win.
Judson will now be off until Tuesday, December 1st, when they host Cornerstone University at 7:00 p.m. in the "Pack the Place" night.
NOTES: Judson has now dropped eight games in a row…the 8-game losing streak is the longest since a 7-game losing streak in 2004-05 that ended the season from Feb. 3 through Feb. 21…the streak matches an 8-game losing streak from the 2003-04 season under Jim Condill that went from Dec. 17 through Jan. 21…the last 9-game losing streak came in the 2000-01 season…Marious Lobdell had 23 points which was second best in his career (this year) as he had 25 vs. Indiana-Northwest…Ben Rayhorn has now scored in double figures in three straight games (21- vs. Missouri Valley for career high, 20 vs. Bethel)…Jim Kuban's 16 points is second best this season to his career-high 20 vs. Bethel…Anthony Ahlers had his first double-digits in rebounding with career-high 11 rebounds…Judson's 33 fouls are the most fouls this year…had 32 fouls vs. Indiana-Northwest and Bethel…they have had only one game under 20 fouls…this was Judson's 4th game this year shooting over 40% from three-point range.
