JU 0, #6 SXU 0 (2 OT) - BOX - JU advances with 3-2 shootout victory

Chicago, Ill.- In one of the most exciting games in Judson women’s soccer history, the #4 seeded Eagles (10-5-2) came away with a 3-2 shootout victory over top seeded #6 St. Xavier (15-3-2) after the match ended in a 0-0 tie with two overtimes. The game officially is scored as a tie but Judson will advance by winning the shootout and keeps JU’s eight-game unbeaten streak alive.

The win gives Judson their first-ever win over SXU, a first-ever win over a top 10 team, and advances them to their first-ever CCAC Tournament Championship match. The Eagles will now face #6 seeded Robert Morris in the CCAC Championship to be played at Judson on Saturday, October 27th. The time for the match is yet to be determined.

In the shootout, SXU’s Lissa Coby went first and was denied a goal by a save from JU’s Alice Phoneprasith. JU’s Samantha Vestal then made the Eagles first shot and SXU tied it at one on their second shot by Britney Kendzora. Judson’s Christina Thornton connected on the second JU shot for a 2-1 advantage with SXU tying it at two on Jessica Martinez’s shot. Judson regained the lead by going three-for-three with a goal by Sarah Schimitz. SXU’s Alana LoPresti missed their fourth attempt to try and tie the match but received a second chance when Emma Mugg’s shot for Judson it the post. SXU’s Sarah Scigalski shot was saved by JU’s Phoneprasith to seal the win for Judson, 3-2. JU did not have to take their fifth penalty shot which was going to be by Lynsey McFarland.

SXU had a chance to take an early lead in the first half when Coby was fouled in the box in the 13th minute. She shot to the left side but hit the post to keep the game at zero. SXU out shot JU, 9-4, in the first half but could not find the net as Phoneprasith had eight saves.

Both teams battled the wind in the second half as each team took less shots. SXU continued their offensive strike with seven shots to JU’s three. In the 75th minute, SXU’s Coby had another chance to give the lead to the Cougars but her shot went off the crossbar. Once again, JU’s Phoneprasith was strong in goal with four saves.

In both overtimes, SXU took a combined two shots. In the first OT, SXU’s LoPresti shot in the 98th minute was saved by Phoneprasith to continue the match. In the second OT, JU’s Thornton sailed a shot from 15 yards out but SXU’s Danielle Wagner was their to catch the save. Thornton also took another shot in the 109th minute the went right.

The win for Judson is their first, ever, against SXU and is also the first-time to advance to the CCAC Tournament Championship match. JU faces Robert Morris in Elgin and will be the second meeting this season. JU fell to RMC, 4-1, earlier in the season in Chicago.
