ELGIN, Ill. - Reinstalling a former program that was rich in tradition, Judson University has announced that it will add both men's and women's track and field for the 2010-11 year. This will be the third year in a row that Judson has added a sport to the athletic department and joins lacrosse for next year. Judson added men's and women's cross country two years ago and then brought in men's and women's golf, men's and women's tennis, and cheerleading this year.
"It is an exciting time for us at Judson as we continue to build our athletic programs," says Director of Athletics Nancy Binger. "To bring back a sport that had some tradition at Judson is a great thing. Track and field will only add to what we have been doing here the past two years."
Current Judson University men's and women's cross country coach Rich Weinhandl will be starting the program for Judson. He has been running the track club team the past two seasons and has started a foundation for the new sports.
"I am totally excited about the challenge to bring yet another sport to Judson University," adds head coach Rich Weinhandl. "The coaching staff is ready to welcome track and field athletes from all parts of the country. In less than two seasons, God has already called 34 men and women to be a part of the cross country program and it will be exciting to watch Him do the same through this new venture."
Track and field will participate in the NAIA and NCCAA and will have scholarships to offer. Judson currently has a club team that can participate at the national meets in 2009-10 but will be a full program in 2010-11.
