ELGIN, Ill. - Not scoring until the 55th minute, Judson University (6-0) came out strong in the second half with two goals for a 2-0 win over St. Ambrose (1-7). Corey Burke (West Chicago, IL/Houghton College) broke the scoreless tie leading Judson to the victory.
On starting out 6-0 on the season, head coach Steve Burke says, "You can't get any better than that but so far so good. We have some things to work on but I'm very encouraged."
This is the fifth time in Steve Burke's career that Judson has started out 6-0. The other seasons were 2004, 1997, 1996, and 1992.
Gaining his third goal of the year, Corey Burke snapped the scoreless tie in the 55th minute on a free kick. He snagged the goal when the ball deflected off a defender from a Rafa Heck (Brazil) kick. It stayed 1-0 until the 83rd minute when Danny Hinterlong (Elgin, IL/Elgin Larkin HS) headed in a security goal for the two-goal advantage.
St. Ambrose tried to take the lead in the game as Matt Carlson had a shot in the 53rd minute that Judson goalie Alex Tyton (Elgin, IL/Trinity International) stopped to secure the shutout. Just two minutes later Judson scored to break the tie.
In the 80th minute, St. Ambrose's Tony Villasenor tried to tie the game but Tyton stopped the shot in its tracks. That was the final shot on goal for St. Ambrose.
Both teams battled in the first half but Judson pressured the St. Ambrose defense with seven shots. St. Ambrose only took three in the first half. Overall, Judson had 12 shots to St. Ambrose's six.
Tyton finished the game with four saves and collected his third shutout of the year and his ninth career shutout. St. Ambrose's Kyle Deraedt had two saves in the loss.
