ELGIN, IL - History was made in the Lindner Fitness Center on Saturday night as Judson University (20-10/10-2) won their second straight CCAC regular season championship with an 87-78 win over Calumet College (7-23/4-8). The CCAC conference championship is only the second one for Judson as they won their first last season. Judson shares the CCAC regular season championship with Cardinal Stritch and Trinity Christian College.
Judson also became only the third team in school history to win 20 or more games in a season. The last time Judson won 20 games was in the 2005-06 season and 24 in the 1983-84 season.
Five Judson players scored in double figures as Landon Skinner had 20 points followed by Dewayne Robinson with 15 points, Josh Edwards and LeStan Hoskins with 11 points, and Ben Rayhorn with 10. Josh Weber led Judson with 10 rebounds. Wilfredo Escobar and Jon Contos had 16 points for Calumet.
"It feels good to win the conference championship for Judson," says head coach Tony Tompkins. "The guys played hard tonight and I am proud of them."
The first three minutes was a battle for Judson as Calumet College took a 6-3 lead. After being down 6-3, Judson had a 12-3 run to take a six-point lead, 15-9. Dovydas Retkus gave Judson the lead for the second time in the game when he made two free throws at the 17:06 mark to make it 7-6. Calumet cut Judson's lead back to one, 18-17, with 7:14 to go only to see Judson rebound with a 23-9 run in just over five minutes. Judson took a 15-point lead, 41-26, on a Hoskins layup with 1:58 left in the half. Calumet did bring the lead back down to 10, 46-36, at the half.
Calumet scored the first six points of the second half to come within four, 46-42, with 18:22 left in the game. On Judson's next possession, Skinner canned a three-pointer that started a 11-4 run in three and half minutes to make it 57-46. With 12:54 to go, Calumet came within eight, which was the closest they would come in the second half, 59-51, before Judson would have yet another run. In the next five minutes, Judson had a 16-3 run to extend their lead to 22, 76-54, and put the game away. This was Judson's largest lead of the game. Calumet did break down Judson's lead in the final three minutes of the game but the Eagles had already done their damage for the win.
Judson finished shooting 56% on the game and was 50% from three-point range and 71% from the stripe. Calumet College was 41% from the floor, 23% from beyond the arc, and 76% from the foul line. Judson turned the ball over 17 times to Calumet's seven but did out rebound Calumet, 36-31.
Judson will most likely be the #2 seed in the CCAC Tournament and host a first-round game on Monday night at 7:00 p.m.
