
HAMMOND, IN. - A second half offensive spurt by Judson University (13-10/4-2) jarred the Eagles to a 73-58 win over Calumet College (4-19/2-4). For the third game in a row, Dewayne Robinson (Memphis, TN) led Judson with 21 points.
Helping Robinson with his 21 points was Josh Weber (Sterling, IL) connecting for 11 points. Ben Rayhorn (Dakota, IL) led Judson's rebounding efforts with 10. Wilfredo Escobar had 12 points for Calumet.
Calumet College cut Judson's lead to six, 37-31, just 30 seconds in to the second half. At that point, Judson's combined efforts of offense and defense worked together as they held Calumet to just four points over the next eight minutes while scoring 15. That run gave Judson a 17-point lead, 52-35, with 11:34 remaining in the game. Calumet's offense came no closer than 11 points, 69-58, with 1:20 left in the game. Landon Skinner (Plano, TX) made a jumper just seven seconds later and then Robinson made consecutive free throws with 33 seconds left to seal the win.
Judson's largest lead of the game came on two free throws by Robinson at the 7:53 mark for a 60-40 lead.
The first half was the most competitive as Calumet took a three-point lead, 7-4, in the first two minutes. Rayhorn hit the first of his two three-pointers to tie the game at seven as he started a 12-2. In three minutes, Judson had a seven-point lead, 16-9. Robinson converted a three-point play at the 16:47 mark followed by Rayhorn's second three-pointer 40 seconds later to make it 13-9. Calumet's Jon Hanselman made it 13-9 but a Skinner three-pointer put Judson back up by seven, 16-9. Calumet came within four, 16-12, but Judson pushed their lead back to eight, 20-12, with 11:41 left in the half.
Weber put Judson up by 12, 28-16, at the 6:31 mark but Calumet had Judson's lead down to seven, 28-21, with just under four minutes left in the half. Nate McNeely (Monmouth, IL) swooshed his only three-pointer of the game with 45 seconds left in the half to give Judson an 11-point lead, 35-24. Waybon McConnell made a shot with 13 seconds left to bring Judson's lead to nine, 35-26, but LeStan Hoskins (Danville, IL) banked a shot to move the lead back to 11. McConnell scored his second basket in a row with a three-pointer to end the half and bring Calumet within eight, 37-29, at the half.
Judson made 40% of their shots from the floor and was 31% from three-point range while making 75% of their free throws. They held Calumet to just 35% from the floor, 28% from beyond the arc, and 66% from the stripe. Judson forced 17 turnovers and had 11 steals while out rebounding Calumet, 45-36.
Judson will travel to Wisconsin on Saturday, January 31st, to take on CCAC leading Cardinal Stritch at 4:00 p.m. Cardinal Stritch is 6-0 in the CCAC and receiving votes in the NAIA Division II national poll.
