
HAMMOND, IN. - Winning their fourth straight game in a row, Judson University (12-8) improved to 4-1 in the CCAC as they defeated Calumet College (3-21/0-5), 63-47. The win keeps Judson in contention for the CCAC championship as they are one-game behind Cardinal Stritch who is 5-0 in the CCAC. Both teams will face on Saturday, January 31st, in Milwaukee, Wisc.
For the second game in a row, Kirstin Johns (Belvidere, IL) led Judson with 19 points and Alicia Rovertoni (Columbia, IL) recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Crystal Goodall (Atlanta, GA) added 14 points. Lisa Upshaw had 20 points for Calumet College.
Looking as though they were going to run away with the game, Judson had a nine-point lead just five minutes into the game, 12-3, as Johns had six of the 12 points. Judson kept their distance but could not get their lead into double digits. Calumet slowly stayed in the game and chipped away at the nine-point lead. With 4:16 left in the half, Judson only had a one-point lead, 22-21, but Rovertoni and Johns combined for five points in one minute to put the lead back at six, 27-21. Calumet did not go away easily as they once again cut into the lead with a three-pointer at the 2:28 mark for a score of 27-24. Rovertoni and Johns finished out the scoring for Judson in those final minutes to take a seven-point halftime lead, 31-24.
Calumet cut Judson's lead to four in the first five minutes of the second half, 38-34, before Judson had an 8-2 run in three minutes for a 10-point lead, 36-46. Calumet was within six, 46-40, with 11:12 left in the game but then didn't score for over four minutes as Judson built an 11-point lead. A free throw by Calumet's Brittany Luckett with 6:59 remaining broke the scoring freeze to make it, 51-41. Calumet made a move to come within seven, 51-44, at the 6:43 mark but that is as close as they would come. Judson finished the game on a 12-3 run for the 63-47 win. Judson took their largest lead of 17, 61-44, with 49 seconds left in the game on an Aubrey Parsons (Sterling, IL) shot.
Judson shot 41% in the game and made 77% from the stripe but only converted 13% of their three-point attempts. Calumet finished shooting 30%, 23% from three-point land, and 52% from the free throw line. Judson's defense forced 21 turnovers and had 17 steals in the win.
Judson will face Cardinal Stritch at 2:00 p.m. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for the CCAC lead on Saturday, January 31st. Cardinal Stritch is one-game ahead of Judson in the CCAC race for first place.
