
ELGIN, IL. - Dewayne Robinson's (Memphis, TN) career-high 37 points was not enough to jolt Judson University (12-10/3-2) past Trinity Christian (14-6/4-1) in an overtime loss, 101-94. Judson finished regulation on an 18-8 run to overcome a 10-point deficit and tie the game at 83 to send the game to overtime. Trinity Christian then shot 75% from the floor in the overtime period and went 12-of-12 from the stripe to seal the win.
Robinson picked up his first double-double of the season as he led Judson with 10 rebounds to go with the 37 points. Landon Skinner (Plano, TX) added 12 points while Dovydas Retkus (Lithuania), Ben Rayhorn (Dakota, IL), and Nate McNeely (Monmouth, IL) all had 11 points. Trinity Christian had four players in double figures, three with 20 or more points, as Kurt Gruppen led them with 24 points.
Trinity Christian's defense, which is tops in the CCAC only averaging 68.5 points per game, came through in the overtime period. They held Judson to just 11 points in that period and Judson missed 12 shots shooting only 25%.
With 13 lead changes, the game provided many exciting moments. With 4:02 left in the game, Trinity Christian had a 10-point lead, 75-65. Just as it looked like they were going to put the game away, Judson put together an 18-8 run. The run was provided by Robinson, Skinner, Rayhorn, and Josh Edwards (Mapleton, IL) to tie the game. Robinson gave Judson a one-point lead, 83-82, with just 13 seconds left. Trinity Christian's Will Bruinsma missed one of his two free throws with seven seconds left to tie the game and then failed a last second shot attempt for the win as the game went into overtime.
Judson did not have a lead in the second half until Robinson's layup with 13 seconds left. Their last lead was 38-36 with 2:12 left in the first half. Judson did tie the game at 53, the 10th tie of the game, at the 14:39 mark in the second half on two Robinson free throws.
Leading by as much as five, 10-5, in the first half, Judson could not keep their lead against Trinity Christian. After that lead, there were seven lead changes in the first half. Trinity Christian's offense was on fire in the first half as they made 62% of their shots and was 5-of-9 from three-point range (55%). Judson almost kept up shooting 40% and mad 53% from beyond the arc. After the game was tied at 38 with two minutes left, Trinity Christian had an 8-4 run to take a four-point lead into the half, 46-42.
It was a very physical game, overall, as there were 52 fouls called with Judson providing 31. Trinity Christian shot 39 free throws and made 30 of them while Judson went 22-of-25 from the stripe. Trinity Christian finished shooting 54% overall, 52% from the three-point line, and 76% from the stripe. Judson was 40% from the floor, 35% from beyond the arc, and made 88% of their free throws. The Trolls out rebounded Judson, 42-31, but Judson won the turnover battle forcing 20 but only giving up nine.
Judson will now face Calumet College in Indiana on Wednesday, January 28th, at 7:30 p.m.
