
ELGIN, IL. - Down seven in the first half, Judson University (9-8/1-1) produced an 18-3 over six minutes to claim an eight point lead, 35-27, over Purdue-Calumet (8-11/2-2) holding onto an 82-78 win. Judson had as large as a 20-point lead in the second half before Purdue-Calumet came within three, twice.
Kirstin Johns (Belvidere, IL) career-high 22 points sparked Judson's win. Alicia Rovertoni (Columbia, IL) collected her third double-double of the season with 19 points and 20 rebounds while Aubrey Parsons (Sterling, IL) also had 19 points. Jennifer Britton had 19 points for the Peregrines.
Purdue-Calumet took an early 5-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game. Rovertoni cut the Peregrines lead to one, 7-6, on a three-pointer at the 16:58 mark but Purdue-Calumet was back up by six, 21-6, with 15:23 left in the half. With 10:50 left in the half, Johns put Judson within one, 18-17, on a three-pointer only to see Purdue-Calumet reel off six straight points for a seven-point lead, 24-17. This was the largest lead for the Peregrines at the 9:45 mark.
Over the next 5:20, Judson held Purdue-Calumet to just three points and netted 18 to claim an eight point lead, 35-27. Johns had nine of the 18 points in the run to push Judson to the lead. From that point on, Judson never relinquished the lead.
In the second half, Judson too their first double-digit lead of 11 points, 51-40, at the 15:46 mark. With 10:39 left in the game, Judson had propelled their lead to 20, 64-44. Purdue-Calumet did not fold up and quit. At the 8:19 mark, Judson had a 17-point lead, 69-52. In the next two and half minutes, Judson would miss five shots as Purdue-Calumet cut the lead to 10, 69-59. Judson increased their lead to 15, 78-63, with 2:03 remaining but the Peregrines still did not give up.
In the next 1:20, Purdue-Calumet went on a 12-0 run to bring Judson's lead to three, 78-75. The Peregrines fouled Crystal Goodall (Atlanta, GA) with 37 seconds left as she made both free throws for a five-point lead, 80-75. Just 22 seconds later, Goodall was fouled again and she split the free throws to extend the lead to six, 81-75. Purdue-Calumet came down and hit a three-pointer with two seconds left bringing the lead back to three, 81-78. The Peregrines fouled Johns with one second left as she also split her free throws for a four-point win, 82-78.
Judson finished shooting 41% from the floor but made 53% of their shots in the first half. They also made 69% from the stripe. They held Purdue-Calumet to 38% from the floor and 36% from beyond the arc. Judson had 12 steals on the night and out rebounded the Peregrines, 44-42.
Judson will travel to Deerfield, Ill., on Wednesday, January 21st, to face Trinity International in CCAC play.
