Cardinal Stritch 52, Judson 49 - Box l Season Stats

ELGIN, IL - Coming down to the final shot of the game, Judson University's (8-8/0-1) three-point attempt by Aubrey Parsons fell short as Cardinal Stritch (9-7/1-0) pulled off a 52-49 CCAC victory over the Eagles in the conference opener. Judson had tied the game with 1:57 left in the game at 49 but couldn't connect with the hoop to take the lead. In the latest NAIA Division II women's basketball poll, Cardinal Stritch was receiving votes and has been ranked as high as ninth in the nation.

Parsons led Judson with 17 points while Kirstin Johns had 13. Alicia Rovertoni collected 12 rebounds. Kayla Chapman had 16 for Cardinal Stritch.

Starting the game off slow, Judson and Cardinal Stritch were tied at four at the 16:00 minute mark when Judson's Crystal Goodall made a jumper. The two teams were then tied at six before Cardinal Stritch's Renet Skorusa made one-of-two from the free throw line for a one-point lead, 7-6, with 14:19 left. Judson then exploded with a 12-4 run over the next four and half minutes for a seven-point advantage, 18-11. Parsons started off the run converting an old fashioned three-point play to give Judson the two-point lead, 9-7. Kristi Siermers gave Judson a seven-point lead, 16-9, at the 11:00 minute mark and then Parsons also made it a seven-point lead, 18-11, with 9:54 left in the half.

In the next six minutes, Cardinal Stritch would outscore Judson, 18-7, to take a four-point lead, 29-25. Cardinal Stritch had as large as an eight-point lead, 29-21, before Judson cut it to four. The final three minutes of the half consisted of each team trying to find the net as the final shot made came from Judson at the 3:04 mark.

Judson tied the game at 33 within the first five minutes of the second half when Johns hit a jumper at the 15:17 mark. Cardinal Stritch scored the next seven points for a 40-33 lead and never relinquished the lead again. Parsons made two free throws with 5:03 left in the game to come within one, 45-44. Judson then had three chances in the next three minutes to take the lead but turned the ball over twice and missed a shot. With 1:57 left in the game, Goodall threw up a three-pointer as the shot clock expired to tie the game at 47. Cardinal Stritch converted an offensive rebound 30 seconds later to retake the lead, 49-47, and then Judson turned the ball over, again, with 1:09 left trying to tie the game.

Cardinal Stritch made it a three-point lead, 50-47, when Skorusa made one-of-two free throws with 1:05 left. Judson grabbed the missed free throw and went down court to try and tie the game. Parsons was fouled with 30 seconds left and made both free throws to cut the lead to one, 50-49. She then fouled Cardinal Stritch's Marianna Herrera with 13 seconds left and Herrera canned both shots to push the lead back to three. Judson then pushed the ball up the court to try for a desperation three-pointer but did not convert as the fell in the CCAC opener.

Judson out rebounded Cardinal Stritch, 43-33, but turned the ball over 20 times to the Wolves nine. Judson finished shooting 35% from the floor while making only four three-pointers for 26%. They had an excellent night at the line making 87% of their shots. Cardinal Stritch made 33% of their shots and was 23% from three-point range and 57% from the line. The big difference came in the turnover category as Cardinal Stritch scored 18 points off of Judson's turnovers.

Judson will now face NAIA Division I St. Francis (IL) on Saturday, January 10th, in Joliet, IL, at 7:30 p.m.
