"Tonight, you saw a glimpse of our fire power offensively," says head coach Tony Tompkins. "I think that that's all we are trying to do, slowly but surely get better every game. I thought when we didn't turn it over we did play well, we had a lot of unforced turnovers. We needed this game to get momentum going into the Bethel game as they are number 2 in the nation."
Edwards made five three-pointers and netted 23 points in the second half while going four-of-four from the free throw line. Overall, he led all scorers with 36 points and dishing out nine balls. His eight overall three-pointers was one shy of a Judson single game record for three-pointers in a game. Judson nailed 14 three-pointers in the game shooting 56% from beyond the arc.
"I was just going with the flow of the game and f it happened (the record) it would happen," says Edwards. "It was a really good win for us as they were a top tier team. It felt really good everyone playing together, taking care of the ball and taking good shots."
For the third game in a row, Landon Skinner (Plano, TX) had 20 or more points with 24. Judson had five players in double figures, overall, with Edwards and Skinner followed by Dovydas Retkus (Lithuania) with 16 and Josh Weber (Monmouth, IL) and Ben Rayhorn (Dakota, IL) each adding 10. LeStan Hoskins (Danville, IL) led all rebounders with nine. Ashford's leading scorer was Matthias Burns with 30 points.
Judson only had an eight-point halftime lead, 48-40, before they went on a 19-6 run to start the second half and take a 21-point lead, 67-46. In the run, Edwards hit four three-pointers scoring 12 of Judson's 21 points in the run. Judson pushed their lead to 25, 79-54, at the 13:32 mark on another Edward's three-pointer. Ashford did not go away easily. With 6:03 left in the game, Judson had a 20-point lead, 93-73, and in just over a minute Ashford cut the led to 11, 93-82, on an 11-2 run. That is as close as Ashford would come to Judson.
The first half was the most intriguing for both teams as there were six lead changes. Judson took a 10-2 lead in the first three minutes. Rayhorn started off an 8-0 run to begin the game with a shot in the pain followed by Edward's first three-pointer of the game. A Rayhorn three-pointer made it 8-0 just two minutes into the game and then Retkus gave Judson a 10-2 lead with 16:58 on the board.
Over the next five minutes, Ashford adjusted their offense and went on a 18-7 run to take a three-point lead, 20-17. Judson responded with a 13-4 run to make it 30-24 with 9:52 remaining. Another run by Ashford resulted in a 40-39 lead outscoring Judson, 16-9, in seven minutes. Judson then finished the half on a 9-0 run and shut out Ashford for an eight-point half-time lead.
The 100-point game is the first since January 9th, 2008, when Judson defeated Purdue-North Central, 102-71.
Judson will now have tough task as they face #2 Bethel College (IN) on Friday, November 14th, at 6:00 p.m. in the Judson University Tournament.
