
Cedar Rapids, IA - Holding off a stingy William Woods University (2-2) team in the Bosch Financial Tournament in Iowa, Judson University came away with a 86-81 win for their first victory of the season. For the second game in a row, freshman Landon Skinner led Judson with 27 points as he had 28 points in the season opener vs. Mt. Mercy.
Adding to Skinner's 27 points were Josh Edwards with 12 and Dovydas Retkus with 10. Retkus also led the team with eight rebounds. Lucas Dahl had 15 points for William Woods.
Looking as though Judson would run away with the game in the second half, William Woods battled back to make a game. Judson kept the lead in the double digits for almost 16 minutes of the second half. Judson was up by 20, 65-45, with 10:35 to go. Ben Rayhorn completed a three-point play to give Judson their largest lead. William Woods slowly started scratching their way back into the game.
With 2:58 left in the game, William Woods had Judson's lead down to nine, 78-69. They had outscored Judson, 24-13, in the last eight minutes to put themselves in a position to make a run for the lead. At the 1:52 mark, William Woods' Justin Cornelius hit a three-pointer to bring the Eagles lead to five, 79-74. Judson's Ryan Shelton made one of two free throws with 25 seconds remaining to give Judson an eight-point lead, 82-74.
William Woods made it a four-point game, 83-79, with just 14 seconds left to play. Judson then made three of their next free throws and forced a turnover to make it 86-79. William Woods then hit a shot at the buzzer to make it 86-81.
An outstanding first half by Judson gave them a 48-32 halftime lead. Judson shot 53% in the half and mad 33% of their three-point shots. William Woods tied the game at four and then took a 6-4 lead just two minutes into the game. Judson answered with a 12-3 run over four minutes for a seven-point lead, 16-9 lead. Judson kept their lead from there and never lost it. Williams Woods was within four, 31-27, with 6:05 left in the half but Judson once again put together a run. In the final six minutes, Judson outscored William Woods 17 to five for a 16-point lead at the half.
Overall, Judson finished shooting 44% from the floor and 30% from the three-point line. They converted 17 of 27 from the stripe for 63%. William Woods was 32% from the floor, 18% from beyond the arc, and 72% from the line.
William Woods out rebounded Judson, 46-42, and forced 21 Judson turnovers. Judson only had seven steals to William Woods eight and eight blocked shots.
Judson will face another Iowa team, Ashford University, on Tuesday, November 11th, at 7:00 p.m. in the Lindner Fitness Center in Elgin.
