
Huntington, IN - Showing that they can play with one of the best teams in the nation, Judson University (1-1) fell shy of knocking off #8 Indiana Wesleyan (1-0), 59-57. Judson had a chance to tie the game with less than 10 seconds to go in the game but missed both shots as Indiana Wesleyan grabbed the rebound with just five seconds to go in the game. Indiana Wesleyan won the 2007 NAIA National Championship and made the NAIA National Tournament last year.
Junior Aubrey Parsons led Judson with 17 points while Kirstin Johns added 12. Alicia Rovertoni grabbed 13 rebounds. Andrea Fichter led Indiana Wesleyan with 13 points.
Judson took a two-point lead, 6-4, just four minutes into the game on a Devonaye Henderson jumper. Over the next four and half minutes, neither team could find the basket as there were nine combined missed shots, eight turnovers, and five steals. Indiana Wesleyan tied the game at six with 11:27 on the clock. The game was then tied at nine with 10:24 remaining but the Wildcats had a 15-4 run in five and a half minutes for a 24-13 advantage. Judson responded in the final five minutes with a 10-5 run to come within six, 29-23, at the half.
In the first seven minutes of the second half, Judson played evenly with Indiana Wesleyan and cut the lead to two, 35-33, on a three-pointer by Parsons. With 10:49 left in the game, Henderson made one of two from the free throw line to put Judson within one, 39-38, but Indiana Wesleyan had the lead back up to nine, 49-40, but the 6:59 mark.
With 4:15 left to go, it looked as though Indiana Wesleyan was going to put Judson away with a 10-point lead, 56-46. But Judson responded with a defensive effort in the final 4:15. The three-pointer by Fichter to put Indiana Wesleyan up by 10 was the last shot made on the floor. Judson held the Wildcats to just three points on free throws in the final 4:15 and went on a 11-1 run.
Rovertoni put Judson within four on a three-point play with 44 seconds left and then Parsons made it 59-57 with a layup and 26 seconds left in the game. Indiana Wesleyan turned the ball over with 15 seconds left in the game as Judson tried to tie the game. Two missed shots later and a defensive rebound by the Wildcats ended the game and Judson's hope of knocking off a top 10 team in the nation.
Judson finished shooting 32% from the floor, 66% from the stripe and only 20% (3-of-15) from beyond the arc. Indiana Wesleyan made only 35% of their shots while making 27% from three-point range and 64% from the free throw line. The Wildcats also out rebounded Judson, 43-42.
Judson will face another tough team on Saturday, November 8th, when they face #22 Huntington University.
