
Judson 3, Trinity Christian 2 - Box
Elgin, IL.- Down two sets to none, Judson University (7-26/2-8) fought back to win the final three sets and upset Trinity Christian College (24-24/6-4), 3-2 (24-26, 24-26, 25-12, 26-24, 15-7). Several Judson players had their best matches of the season as both Danielle Dull (Waupun, WI) and Kiley Helgerson (Inverness, IL) recorded career-highs in kills.
It came down to the fifth set after Judson battled back to tie the match at two sets a piece. Trinity Christian's Sara Ooms started off the set with a kill to put the Trolls up 1-0. Judson responded by scoring 10 of the next 11 points for a 10-2 advantage. Dull tied the game at one a kill and then Judson took a 2-1 lead on a Troll ball handling error. Michelle Schurman's kill tied the game at two for the Trolls and then Judson scored the next eight points. Of those eight points, five were kills from Dull, Helgerson, and Debra Leganski (Elgin, IL). Helgerson made it 9-2 with her second kill in that run and then Trinity Christian's Ooms had an attack error to give Judson an eight-point advantage.
Trinity Christian cut the lead to six, 12-6, but Judson finished off the match by scoring three of the last four points. A Trinity Christian service error made it 13-6 but Judson gave back the point on the next serve with an attack error. Judson finished of Trinity Christian with two straight kills by Leganski and Dull to take the match win, 3-2.
Dull led the attack charge with a career-high 24 kills and a .368 hitting percentage. She attacked the ball 57 times and had only three errors. Helgerson followed suite with 14 kills for a career-high. Leganski made it a triple threat with 14 kills, too. Recording season-highs were Carly Campioni (Crystal Lake, IL), Tracey Enzenbacher (St. Charles, IL), and Leganski. Campioni had 43 assists which is the 13th time in her career to have 40 or more assists in a match. Enzenbacher had 27 digs and then Leganksi recorded 30 digs.
The first two sets were the very close and could have gone either way. With 15 ties and eight lead changes in the first two sets, Trinity Christian pulled out the wins. Judson was up 20-15 in set one but saw Trinity Christian come racing back to tie the game at 23 and 24. The Trolls took a 25-24 lead on an Ooms kill and then won the set on a Judson attack error.
Set two was a mirror image of set one with a 26-24 win by Trinity Christian. Judson had a 10-7 lead only to see Trinity Christian go on a roll to take a 17-13 lead. Judson fought back to tie the set at 22 on a Leganski kill and then take a 23-22 lead on a Dull kill. The Trolls scored the next two points for a 24-23 advantage but gave a point to Judson on a setting error. Following the 15th tie of the match, Trinity Christian had two straight kills by Ooms and Sarah Koehling for the set win.
The biggest turning point of the match came in set three when Judson took over with a 25-12 win by dominating the Trolls. Judson jumped out quickly on Trinity Christian for a 9-1 lead. The Trolls scored the next two points to come within six, 9-3, but that is as close as they would come to Judson. Dull finished off the set with a kill to make it 25-12.
With the momentum and two close sets, Judson felt the mode in the arena switch to their side. Set four had 12 ties and four lead changes, the most in the match. The lead for each team was no larger than three at one point. Judson was up 21-18, and 24-21, only to see the Trolls tie the match at 24. Campioni and Helgerson put an end to set four with two straight kills and to tie the match at two sets each before going on for the 15-7 win in set five.
There were 29 total ties in the entire match with 13 lead changes. Judson hit their best in set three with a .435 percentage on 10 kills with no errors. Their next best set was set five with nine kills and a .261 hitting percentage. Trinity Christian never hit over .150 in any set and had a.000 hitting percentage in set five.
Judson finishes their season at 7-26 as they did not qualify for the CCAC Tournament. They also did not have any seniors on the team and will have the entire team back for the 2009 season.
