Judson 1, Trinity International 0 - Box

Deerfield, IL.- Becoming the NAIA's all-time career wins leader against a former Judson University men's soccer player, head coach Steve Burke won his 438th career game at Judson University (7-3/2-1) with a 1-0 win over Trinity International University (4-7-1/2-2-1). This was the fifth match this season that Judson won 1-0 and their sixth shutout overall.

"I am very happy and excited right now," says Burke. "All week I have been receiving phone calls and emails about the record and it is now nice to break it. My wife was texting my son's girlfriend at Houghton College (NY) to update him and they announced it over their P.A. when we won. I am just happy right now and I am glad the win came against a good team."

Burke's son, Corey, is a freshman at Houghton College and a member of the men's soccer team. Houghton College is where Burke graduated from and played for his father Doug Burke who is 10th on the NAIA all-time career wins list with 238 wins.

Burke picks up his win over former Judson University men's soccer player Patrick Gilliam (1988-90) who is the head coach at Trinity International University. With the win, Burke surpasses Rockhurst University's Tony Tocco's 437 wins. Burke is in his 25th season at Judson and now has a 438-133-32 overall record. He has won 14 conference championships, five National Christian Championships, and coached in five NAIA National Tournaments. He has produced 122 all-conference players and 34 NAIA All-Americans in 25 years.

For the second match in a row, senior Petar Bajic (Serbia) netted the game winning goal as he put Judson up, 1-0, in the 61st minute of the match. A corner kick by Gustavo Oliveira (Brazil) ended in a pass from Aduato Oliveira (Brazil) as he put through a pass to Bajic that reached the net. Judson then played stellar defense after the goal and only allowed one shot by Trinity International to come away with the win.

Both teams battled in the first half as Judson took four shots to Trinity International's three. The Trojans, though, had six corner kicks but could not convert. Three of Judson's first four shots of the first half came within the first 14 minutes as Aduato Oliveira almost made it 1-0 but his shot was blocked in the eighth minute. He then took another shot in the 12th minute that went high. In the 14th minute, Matt Gloss (Elgin, IL) had a look at the goal but Trinity International's Lucas Zicher received his first of two saves on the match. Gustavo Oliveira took Judson's fourth shot of the match in the 44th minute but it went wide.

In the 21st minute of the match, Judson's Alex Tyton (Elgin, IL) recorded his first of two saves when he stopped Travis Bacon's shot.

The offenses slowed down in the second half as both teams went into a defensive mode. Both Judson and Trinity International took two shots each with Judson's only score coming in the 61st minute. Trinity International did try and score quickly in the second half as Evan Paur tried to give the Trojans a goal in the 48th minute but Judson's Tyton collected his second save of the match.

In the win for Judson, Tyton recorded his fifth shutout of the year and is now 5-1 as a goalie.

Judson has now shutout six of their last seven opponents and won five matches, 1-0. They will now travel to St. Francis (IL) on Tuesday, October 7th, for a CCAC match at 4:00 p.m.
