Elgin, IL - Three goals in first half set the University of St. Francis (IN) up for the win over Judson University (1-2) in women's soccer. Playing in their first home match of the season, Judson fought hard to overcome an early deficit but could not find the tying goal in a 3-2 loss.
St. Francis (4-2-1) scored twice within the first 15 minutes with the first goal coming on a fluke shot from Sara Thieme after receiving a pass from Kendra Reimer. Mary Whisler received the next scoring opportunity off a penalty shot placing it in the right side of the net.
Judson's Christina Thornton (Algonquin, IL) cut the lead to one, 2-1, in the 31st minute when Betsy Barthel (Des Plaines, IL) found Thornton on a bounce pass. The one-goal lead only lasted four minutes as St. Francis netted their third goal of the match off a lucky deflection from Angie Carusone shot that deflected across the box and Jenna Mahon was able to get a foot on it in order to put it in the goal.
Judson made a push in the second half by taking five shots and cutting the lead to one, 3-2. Lynsey McFarland (Scotland) brought the score to within one when she sailed a free kick from 20-yards out into the left side of the net to score Judson's second goal in the 59th minute.
Judson will take to the road on Friday and Saturday, September 12th and 13th, as they will play in the Mt. Vernon Nazarene Tournament in Ohio. Judson will face Spring Arbor on Friday at 1:00 p.m. and then play Mt. Vernon on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
