ELGIN, Ill. - - - The 2017-18 season is right around the corner and the Judson University Cross Country preseason is taking shape. The Judson Athletic department is proud to announce that fifth year Head Men's and Women's Track & Field coach Joel Popenfoose will now also direct and coach the Judson Cross Country teams for the upcoming season.


Popenfoose takes over as the newly appointed Director of Cross Country and Track & Field. The announcement was made as former coach Morgan Goetshel has taken a new coaching position at Rockford University. Coach Popenfoose has had outstanding success at the helm of the Judson's Track and Field program. In his four years, Coach Popenfoose has helped set 78 school records, has had 19 athletes qualify for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Championships, of which four were named NAIA All-Americans including the school's first ever NAIA National Champion. Also at the national level, Popenfoose's teams at the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) have produced nine NCCAA All-Americans and two NCCAA National Champions. Around the conference, Popenfoose has helped produce 24 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) All-Conference athletes, eight CCAC Champions, and three CCAC record holders. The track and field teams have additionally been successful on the academic end with two NAIA Scholar team awards, 31 CCAC All-Academic awards, nine Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes, 15 NCCAA Scholar-Athletes, and one Judson University Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. 


"We are excited for the opportunity to have Joel lead our Cross Country program," stated Athletic Director Chad Gassman. "Joel is an outstanding recruiter and coach and will look to bring some of his track & field success over to the cross country program. He will be a great asset in continuing to move the program forward." 


Both men's and women's cross country open the season on September 1st, at Elmhurst College for the Early Bird Invitational.
