Elgin, Ill. –Continuing to build for the first season of the Judson University cross country team the fall of 2008, head coach Rich Weinhandl has signed two more runners for the men's team. Thomas Jarrett and Nick Sustersic will both run for Judson next season.
Jarrett, coming to Judson from St. Louis, Missouri, is a senior at Westminster Christian Academy in St. Louis. He will major in architecture while at Judson. His personal best in the 5K is 18:30 and he has times of 11.0 in the 100 meter run, 23.0 in the 200 meter run, and 52.0 in the 400 meter run.
Susteric will come to Judson from A.A. Stagg High School in Palos Hills, Illinois. This past season, he placed 44th at the IHSA State Championships. He has been a four-year member of both the cross country and track teams at A.A. Stagg HS. He has a personal best of 15:07 in the three-mile run and has times of 10:00 in the two-mile and 4:44 in the one mile. He is the son of Frank and Nancy Sustersic.
Jarrett and Susteric join Robert Altenburger (New Salem, Ohio), Matt DeBall (DeKalb, Ill.), Kyle Bricka (Elgin, Ill.), and Ethan Hahn (Lindenhurst, Ill.) on the new team.
Judson is starting both men's and women's cross country back up after a 12 year absence. The program was cut after the 1996 season for both programs. The men's team produced two Judson Athletes of the Year in Dan Westlund (1982) and Mike O'Brien (1996). Westlund was voted into the Judson Hall of Fame in 2006 for his cross country accolades. He was a four-time all-NIIC (Northern Illinois Intercollegiate Conference) runner and team MVP. He was also a two-time NCCAA (National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association) All-American, NAIA National Qualifier, and all-NAIA District team member. The men's team also won three straight NIIC Championships in 1993, 1994, and 1995 along with being the NAIA District Champions in 1993.
