Elgin, Ill.- The strongest era in Judson women's soccer has come to an end as head coach Freddie King, Jr., has decided to resign his position. King will just teach in the Judson Exercise and Sports Science Department full-time, now. Taking over the program, immediately, will be Judson alumnus Diego Cevallos as the interim coach for the 2008 season.
"What Freddie has accomplished with our women's soccer program has been outstanding," says Judson Director of Athletics Nancy Smith. "In the past five years he has built this program into a contender at all levels. He will be missed and what he has done for the program will not be forgotten. I am thankful that the University will still benefit from his leadership and teaching."
King, who guided Judson to their first-ever CCAC Tournament Championship and a #1seed in the NAIA Region VII tournament this past season, finishes his career as the winningest coach in the program with a 47-42-5 and was 19-25-1 in the CCAC. His finest finish in the CCAC came this past season in fourth-place at 6-3. In 2006, he was named the CCAC and NCCAA North Central Region "Coach of the Year."
"I am thankful for the experience of being a part of the program here the past five seasons. The growth was challenging and the results have been exciting," says King. "I know the players returning will do their best keeping things going in the right direction. There is much more for the team to accomplish and they are capable of doing it. I look forward to seeing it happen in my new role as a fan."
In the Midwest and nationally, he helped put Judson on the map in women's soccer. In the past two seasons, he has had three NAIA All-Americans and three All-CCAC First-Team selections along with a CCAC Freshman of the Year. Overall in five seasons, he had 10 All-CCAC selections, three NAIA All-Americans, two NCCAA All-Americans, four NAIA All-Region selections, eight NCCAA All-Region selections, and nine NAIA and NCCAA Scholar-Athletes.
Helping turn around the women's soccer program, Judson made the CCAC Tournament all five years. This past season he had the biggest accomplishment of the program by winning the CCAC Tournament and gaining the #1 seed in the NAIA Region VII Tournament for the first time ever. In the 2006 season, Judson won a program best 15 matches en route to a 9th place finish at the NCCAA (National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association) National Tournament. That team also qualified for the NAIA Region VII Tournament, too.
This past season also brought the programs first win over nationally ranked programs in #12 Trinity Christian College. Judson advanced in the CCAC Tournament with a shoot out win over #6 St. Xavier but the game is recorded as a tie.
Taking over the program immediately will be Judson alumnus Diego Cevallos. He has been an assistant coach for the Judson men's soccer team the past four season.
