Elgin, IL – Hammering six home runs, Judson University (12-6/4-0) swept a CCAC softball double header from Calumet College (5-9/1-3) and improved to 4-0 in the CCAC and 12-6 overall. Judson took the first game, 6-4, and then won 4-2 in game two. Deb Leganski hit three home runs in all three at-bats in the first game with four RBI.
Calumet College came out swinging in the first inning as they scored three runs for a 3-0 advantage. Judson picked up a run in the bottom of the second inning when Leganski hit her first of three home runs to make it 3-1.
In the top of third inning, CC scored another run for a three-run lead, 4-3, only to see JU slim down the lead to one, 4-3, in the bottom of the inning. Nicole Dimiceli scored the first run on a wild pitch and then Leganski smashed her second bomb of the day to come within one.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Lizzy Jacobson singled home Dimiceli to tie the game at four. With the game tied, CC put in relief pitcher Ana Liptack but she could not solve Leganski as Leganski lifted her third home run of the game to take a 6-4 lead which led to the win.
Jacobson received the win as she improved to 4-2 on the year with four strikeouts. Leganski had four of Judson’s six runs and had three of Judson’s seven hits.
Aimee Ewert went the distance vs. Calumet in game two and recorded eight strikeouts. She started the game by getting the first three batters out. Judson then scored a run in the bottom of the first inning as Amy Meier hit the fourth home run of the game leading off the inning.
CC tied the game at the top of the fourth inning only to see Judson add three runs in the bottom of the inning. Jacobson started off the inning with a home run and then four batters later, Rachel Pope peeled off the sixth home run of the day with a clutch two-out hit to make it 4-1.
In the top of the fifth inning, CC added a run but that is as close as they would get to Judson. Judson only had five hits in the game but two were home runs. Meier, Carrie Sensor, Jacobson, Leganski, and Pope each had a hit.
Judson will now face #17 Olivet Nazarene University on Thursday, March 27th, at 3 p.m. in Bourbonnais, Ill. In the latest NAIA Region VII ratings, Judson is #3 while ONU is #1. It is the first-time, ever, that Judson has been ranked in the regional rankings.
