CHICAGO, Ill. – Coming back from being 14 points down and not missing a free throw in 17 tries the Judson University women's basketball team improved to 11-10 with a 14-point win over NAIA Division I Roosevelt University (12-10), 78-64. Down four points at the half, 33-29, before putting up 49 points in the second half, Judson had six players finish in double figures.
Karen Senette (Soldotna, Ak.) had 13 points to lead Judson as ShaRhonda Huff (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Hailey Cnota (Lake in the Hills, Ill.), and Ricquel Butler (Keller, Texas) all had 12 points. Emily Ragsdale (Ottawa, Ill.) and Kim Peek (Springdale, Ark.) added 10 points. Ragsdale also led the team with nine rebounds and three blocks. Kiara Towles had 15 points for Roosevelt.
The second half was the turnaround half for Judson as they were down seven in the first three minutes after halftime. Roosevelt had a 39-32 lead when Judson went on a 7-0 run in two and a half minutes to tie the game at 39. Ragsdale had four of the seven points in the run for Judson. Roosevelt pushed the lead back to five, 48-43, with 12:04 left in the game. In the final 12 minutes, Judson outscored Roosevelt, 35-16, for the 14-point win. It started with a Ragsdale layup that kicked off an 11-5 run over the next four and half minutes as Judson took the lead for good, 54-53, on two free throws by Peek at the 7:19 mark.
With 6:35 left, Roosevelt was down by two, 57-55, after Judson had a four-point lead. Just 25 seconds later, Shaniqua Roberts hit a three-pointer that sparked a 21-7 run over the next six minutes as Judson put the game away. Roberts finished the run she started with 47 seconds left on the clock by swooshing two free throws for a 16-point lead, 78-62. Roosevelt hit one bucket with 12 seconds left to make the final, 78-64. In the final 6:10, Roosevelt only made two baskets from the floor. Judson shot 50% in the second half going 15-of-15 from the foul line and making 46% from the three-point line.
Roosevelt and Judson were tied at 10 with 12:22 left in the first half when Roosevelt reeled off 14 straight points in four minutes for a 14-point lead, 24-10. Judson responded with a 19-7 run in six and half minutes to come within four, 33-29. Neither team made a basket in the final two minutes of the half.
Judson finished shooting 44% from the floor, 40% from beyond the arc, and 100% from the stripe (17-of-17) while holding Roosevelt to 32% from the floor, 24% from the three-point line, and 73% from the foul line. Judson held a one rebound advantage, 41-40, and forced 23 turnovers with four blocked shots.
Judson will host Purdue-Calumet on Wednesday, January 25th, at 5:30 p.m. in the Lindner Fitness Center in CCAC play.
