Video: Interview with Mike Tobie

ELGIN, Ill. – Offered a tryout with the Major League Soccer club San Jose Earthquakes, Mike Tobie (Grayslake, Ill.) will be in camp with the new draft picks next week in California.  Tobie was invited to the first week of camp after the MLS supplemental draft was over where he was on the board but did not get drafted.

Tobie will be going to camp with MLS SuperDraft selections Sam Garza (UCalifornia-Santa Barbara), Jacob Husted (Washington), and Chris Blais (South Florida) and supplemental draftees James Kiffe (UCalifornia-Santa Barbara), Ceaser Diaz Pizarro (UCalifornia-Riverside), David Tiemstra (Ohio State), and Tyler Krumpe (Loyola-Marymount).  He will go into camp in the same position as all the draftees and have one week to prove himself.  If the Earthquakes like his play, he may be offered a contract to stay the rest of the camp.  He is one of three NAIA players that are currently known going to a MLS camp.

"This is a great opportunity to be able to go out and play with some of the best soccer players in the nation," says Tobie.  "I want to thank coach (Steve) Burke for giving me the opportunity to finish my collegiate career at Judson and for his coaching the past two years.  I have enjoyed being a part of the Judson teams and competing against some of the best teams in the NAIA."

Tobie finished his career at Judson (2010, 2011) with 32 goals, four assists, and 63 points and was a two-time All-CCAC selection along with being named a NCCAA All-American.

He joins a list of former Judson players that have been considered for the MLS in Docco Wesseh (2002, 2004), Jesus Saiz (2005-06), and Jason Acres (1991-93).  Wesseh ended up playing for the Thunder Bay Chill in the PDL while Acres played in the Chicago Fire system.  Currently, former goal keeper Alex Tyton is playing professionally in Poland.  Aron Hyde (2002-04), a former goal keeper for Judson, is currently the Chicago Fire's goal keeper coach.
