
ORMOND BEACH, Fla. - Continuing their pitching and hitting dominance in Florida, Judson University swept their second team in two days with 8-6 and 7-3 wins over Marian University. Mitch Smith and Tyler Ware picked up wins and Johnny Amann had his third home run and double of the year.
After being down 4-0 in the first inning, Judson scored seven runs in two innings and take command of the game. Marian put a four-spot in the board in the bottom of the first inning but Judson then tied the game at four with four runs in the third inning. An inning later, Judson added three more runs to make it 7-3. Marian cut the lead to one, 7-6, in the bottom of the fourth. An insurance run came in for Judson in the top of the seventh to make it 8-6.
Mitch Smith went five innings and only gave up one walk. Kevin Carmody worked the sixth inning and had a strikeout and T.J. Swank earned his second save of the year with one strikeout in the seventh. Joe Young went 3-of-3 with a RBI and a double. Swank and Nate Rohl had two hits and two RBI a piece while Amann added two RBI with a double. Giovanni Cantwell also had a double for one RBI.
After being down four in the first inning, Judson responded in the top of the third inning. Amann brought in the first run with a sacrifice fly as Nick Norris came in from third base. With two outs, Judson scored three more runs. Two batters later, Swank singled to left field as Young was Judson's second run of the game. With the bases loaded, Rohl doubled to left center field as both Swank and Brian Brauer touched the plate to tie the game at four.
The fourth inning brought three more runs for three-run advantage. Young gained his only RBI of the game with a single to left field as Cantwell scored. Amann then followed with a double as Young came in for the fifth sixth run and Swank finished out the scoring with a single to left field bringing home Amann.
Marian made the game interesting with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to come within one. Smith started the sixth inning and faced one batter before Carmody came in for relief. The first batter Carmody faced hit into a fielder's choice and the next batter popped up for the second out of the inning. A single and a hit batter loaded the bases but Carmondy struck out the four-hole hitter, Ungru, to end the threat.
In the seventh inning, McHenry started out the inning striking out but made it to first base on a dropped third strike. Rohl advanced McHenry to third with a double down the left field line and two batters later Cantwell had a sacrifice fly for a two-run lead, 8-6.
Swank worked the seventh inning and earned his second save of the year. The inning started off with a single by Marian's Mills. He made it to second on a ground out and then onto third with another ground out. With two outs, Mullis was walked to put runners on the corners for Marian. Swank then ended the game with a strikeout to give Judson the game one win.
Game two started out much like game one as Judson spotted Marian a three-run lead in the first inning. Judson cut the lead to two, 3-1, in the bottom of the second and then put up five runs in the fifth inning for a 6-3 lead. They added another run in the sixth for a four-run advantage, 7-3.
Amann and Brian Brauer each had two hits while Matt McHenry and Ben Vincent provided two RBI each. Nick Norris also had a RBI in the game.
Down 3-0, Judson put their first run up in the second inning. Billy Wright doubled to left center field with one out and two batters later, with two outs, Norris singled as Wright came in from second. After two scoreless innings, Judson exploded for five runs in the fifth inning to take over the game. Norris started the inning off with a walk and then Amann singled to put Norris on third base. Brauer had the second single of the inning as Norris crossed the plate to come within one, 3-2. Two batters later, McHenry had the game changing hit with a double to give Judson the lead, 4-3. Both Brauer and Amann came in on the hit. After a groundout, Marian's Wilder hit two batters back-to-back to set up Vincent at the plate. Vincent came through to give Judson two more runs on a two-out single to right field as both Young and McHenry scored.
Judson added their seventh run of the game in the seventh inning on a leadoff home run by Amann.
Judson will play a nine-inning game vs. Aquinas College on Tuesday, March 8th, at 10:00 a.m. in Sandford, Fla. Judson has now won four games in a row and is 8-4.
