
Elgin, Ill.- Taking an 85-72 win over East-West University (1-3), Judson University (1-2) held off the Phantoms in the final six minutes of the game for their first win of the year. EWU was within four points at the 6:13 mark but JU finished on an 18-9 run for the win.
Four players came away with 10 or more points as DeWayne Robinson led all scorers with 23 points. Steffan Williams scored 16 followed by Chris Oates with 15 and Ilija Bjanic with 14. Pierre Glover had 22 for EWU. Joe Gonnam recorded nine rebounds for JU.
After EWU took a 2-0 lead on the opening bucket, JU went on a 10-0 run for an eight point lead, 10-2. They had their largest lead of 14 points, 25-11, with 9:32 left in the half on a Williams’ layup. EWU responded with an 11-0 run over two minutes to come within three, 25-22, but the Eagles did not fold as JU answered on a 12-4 run for an 11-point lead, 37-26 (3:24). A layup just before the half by EWU brought JU’s lead down to 10, 44-34.
EWU ran right back at Judson in opening minutes of the second half. In the first seven minutes, they outscored JU, 16-3, to come back to within three, 50-47. By the 7:53 mark, EWU was only down by one, 63-62, but could not get a shot to fall in the next six minutes as JU produced a 17-3 run for a 15-point lead, 80-65. EWU could not recover and JU picked up their first win of the year.
Judson finished shooting 50% from the floor and made 61% of their free throws. EWU made 44% from the floor and only 43% from the free throw line. Both teams grabbed 39 rebounds.
JU will now face Concordia College (MI) in the Judson Tournament Championship at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 17th. East-West will play Grace College at 2:00 p.m. in the consolation game.
