Notes for the New Season
The long standing tradition of winning at Judson University in men's soccer is still going strong. The 2010 season will only add to that tradition with 15 returners and a strong recruiting class. The sites will be set on yet another CCAC Championship and the team's seventh trip to the NAIA National Tournament.

The returners bring back a taste of the post-season as Judson won their sixth NCCAA National Championship in 2009. Last year also featured Judson's fifth regular season CCAC Championship in six years. Alex Tyton (Elgin, IL), Rafa Heck (Brazil), Sven Moeller (Germany), and William Zardetto (Brazil) are the feature returners with awards.

Senior goalkeeper Tyton has the most hardware as he was voted the NCCAA National Tournament Defensive MVP, NCCAA All-American first-team, NCCAA All-Region first-team, All-CCAC first-team, and was also the CCAC Player of the Week and NCCAA National Player of the Week. Posting nine shutouts, he combined for a 0.89 GAA with 98 saves.

Senior midfielder Moeller was Judson's Athlete of the Year and on the All-CCAC first-team. He also earned NCCAA All-Region first-team and was a NAIA and NCCAA scholar-athlete. Second in command in the scoring category and leading the team in goals, he had 32 points which came from 11 goals and 10 assists.

Junior midfielder Heck brings back experience from the NCCAA All-Tournament team while also being voted to the All-CCAC honorable mention team. He also picked up CCAC Player of the Week, once, and was NCCAA All-Region. Finishing third on the team in points, he provided nine goals and six assists for 24 points.

Rounding out the returning rewards is junior midfielder Zardetto. He earned All-CCAC first-team. He also posted two goals and one assist for five points.

Winning Program

Heading into the 2010 season, Judson has the most NAIA wins for a program at 585. They are 13 wins ahead of Westmont's (Calif.) 572 wins. It is the third year in a row that Judson has led the NAIA in wins. Judson took over for most wins after the 2008 season when Steve Burke became the all-time wins leader for NAIA coaches. Burke currently has 465 wins and is entering his 27th season at Judson. In 26 years as a coach, he has combined for 20 conference championships, went to six NAIA National Tournaments, won six NCCAA National Championships, and produced numerous all-conference players.

Premier Development League (PDL)
This summer four Judson men's soccer players had the chance to play with the best in the nation and world. William Zardetto, Rafa Heck, Cristiano Costa (Brazil), and Fernando Alvarez (Elgin, IL) all played in the Premier Development League for the Thunder Bay Chill. The Chill advanced to the championship match featured on Fox Sports Soccer Channel. Alvarez played in 13 of the 16 games as a defender. Zardetto had one goal for two points in 13 matches played and took three shots on the season. Heck combined for one goal and one assist in 14 matches played. Costa was a back-up goalie for the team. The players had the chance to play with two fellow NAIA players from Lindsey Wilson on their team, too.

CCAC Competition

With a target on their back each year, Judson has stood strong in the CCAC. Each year, though, the conference competition becomes stronger. In 2008, Judson's streak of four straight regular season titles was broken by Illinois Tech but Judson won their fifth straight CCAC regular season championship that year. Last year, Judson's CCAC Tournament streak for championships (5) was broken by Olivet Nazarene. Judson did sneak out the regular season title for the fifth time in six years with an 8-2 record. No other program has ever matched that in the CCAC.

NAIA National Ranking

Heading into the 2010 season, Judson is receiving votes in the preseason NAIA National Poll. They are rated the second team in the CCAC behind Olivet Nazarene. Olivet Nazarene has the most votes with 36 but Judson picked up 13 votes.

Interview with head coach Steve Burke

1. With the majority of your team returning, how do you feel about your team? Quite excited about the majority of the team coming back and having lots of experience. I'm hoping that we can pick up where we left off last season and even step it up a bit. We have some serious injury issues right now, but I'm still quite optimistic.

2. How is the incoming class looking to contribute to the team? A very strong recruiting class! We have some great young guys who will see some quality minutes in their first year.

3. Talk about how your schedule is set up and some of the teams you are playing? We play 6 teams this year that were conference champions and/or national tournament participants. Probably the toughest schedule that we have ever played. Most of these are out of conference so they will be able to prepare us for conference games and post season.

4. How is the CCAC shaping up this year? Tough as always. The past five years have been a steady improvement in the quality of the teams and the top half of the conference will just be a dogfight.

5. What is your philosophy on staying on top of the CCAC ? It means that we can never sit back and rest. Everyone is always gunning for us, so we have to be sharp at all times. It's quite a challenge to stay at or near the top and this year will be no different. We will see some great competition this yearc for sure.

6. What do you think about looking back at 26 seasons and winning 20 conference championships and 6 NCCAA National Championships? It has certainly been amazing and a lot of fun! We have had so many special teams and players over that span and it's a great tradition that we have built. I just hope that we can keep it going as long as I'm here!
