ELGIN, Ill. - One of the many features of being an athlete at Judson University is committing your time to the community. In the 2009-10 athletic year, the Judson University athletes worked with six different agencies for community service.
A continuing partnership that Judson has each year is with Riverwoods Christian Center from St. Charles, Ill. The athletes work with the local advocate from Riverwoods in the spring time as they play and educate the youth. Riverwoods brings the youth to Judson University twice a month and the athletes then play in the gym and tutor the youth. Through a generous donation, the youth then get a chance to go eat supper in the cafeteria with the athletes.
For the second year in a row, Judson had the chance to go to Hillcrest Elementary School in Elgin, Ill., to talk to 3rd graders about being an athlete. Judson athletes set up stations for different sports and then showed the athletes how to play that sport.
Judson also worked with the Salvation Army after the Haiti earthquake. The baseball and softball teams went to the Salvation Army and helped to pack over a million lunches for the people in Haiti.
The women's basketball team teamed up with the Little Angels Nursing Home and spent an afternoon at the nursing home. The team spent time with the adults by playing games and talking to them.
There were also several athletes that are involved with the Judson Student Organization in leadership positions and resident assistants that gave their time, too, to other services.
Doing community service as a Judson University athlete is just one of the many events you get to be a part of.
