MASON, Ohio - Spring Arbor University broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning when they posted three runs in the inning to take a 5-2 lead and then held onto the win in the first round of the NCCAA World Series. Judson will now have to play out of the loser's bracket and faces King's College at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 20th.
Mitch Smith went 4.1 innings from the mound with 11 hits for five earned runs. Joe Huenecke finished the final 1.2 innings and had one strikeout and two hits. Johnny Amann led Judson with two hits but both Brian Brauer and Derek Shomon had one RBI. Shomon's RBI came on his second home run of the year down the right field line.
Spring Arbor took an early lead in the first inning with one run but Judson tied the game at one in the top of the third inning. Levi Pippenger started the inning with a double and then two batters later Brauer singled him in to tie the game.
The tie did not last long as Spring Arbor retook the lead in the bottom of the third, 2-1. Judson struck with two outs to tie the game in the top of the fourth on Shomon's home run but saw the lead disappear in the bottom of the fifth.
Judson left nine runners on base to Spring Arbor's eight and was out hit 13 hits to seven hits. Colin O'Connell ended up with eight strikeouts and the win for Spring Arbor.
Judson will now try for their 40th win of the year against NCAA Division II Kings College. The game will be played at Legacy Field right next to Prasco Park at 10:00 a.m.
