CHICAGO, Ill. - A rain drenched ending for Judson University took place at St. Xavier as the Cougars came from behind for a 6-4 win in the CCAC Tournament. Judson was up 4-3 but St. Xavier scored four runs in the final three innings to advance in the CCAC Tournament to the championship game. Judson is now 36-21 on the year.
Ed Draper took the loss pitching the final two innings as he fell to 4-2 on the year. He gave up two runs on two hits. Stefan Alinkas started the game and went 5.1 innings with two strikeouts and four earned runs. Kevin Carmody finished the inning and had one strikeout.
Judson was led by a 2-of-4 performance by Zach Williams with one runs scored. Andy Parsill recorded three RBI while Nate Rohl had one RBI.
With the momentum shifting in Judson's favor in the top of the sixth inning, a triple play for St. Xavier changed the game. The bases were loaded for Judson and Andy Parsill had just walked to give the Eagles a two-run lead, 4-2. Giovanni Cantwell then hit a hard shot to second base that looked like it was a scooped catch but was ruled a catch. St. Xavier's Matt Mueller reacted quickly as the Judson runners were caught in confusion and through it to second base as shortstop John O'Brien caught the ball and heaved it to first baseman Ken Tezak to complete the triple play and end Judson's threat.
Following that, Tony Testin tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a two-run home run to right field. The wind in Judson's sails quickly shifted to St. Xavier. After a scoreless seventh inning, St. Xavier's Tezak doubled in two runs with two outs for a two-run advantage. Judson then came to bat in the top of the ninth and the skies opened up and let the rain come down for an almost three-hour rain delay. The game resumed at 4:30 p.m. and Judson could not get back any momentum as St. Xavier took the win and advanced to face Robert Morris in the championship game.
Judson got on the board first with one run in the first inning. Matt McHenry walked with two outs and then Rohl tripled to right center field for the first run. St. Xavier took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third before Judson retook the lead, 3-2, in the top of the fourth.
Parsill recorded two of his three RBI with a double to left center field as both Williams and Rohl scored for the lead. Parsill then picked up his other RBI with a walk in the sixth to make it 4-2.
Judson will now play in the NCCAA (National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association) North Central Regional on Friday, May 14th, at Olivet Nazarene University. Judson will play Trinity International University at 11:00 a.m. with the winner taking on Olivet Nazarene at 3:00 p.m. The winner of the regional advances to the NCCAA National Tournament in Mason, Ohio.
