ELGIN, Ill. - Breaking out of a six-game slump in flashy way to tie the program record for wins, Judson University ended St. Xavier's 14-game winning streak, 7-3, in the final game of the CCAC series. Judson was down 3-1 and came back for their 30th win of the year to tie the program record for wins set last year.
Nick Krisman had a strong night on the mound going 8.1 innings for his seventh win of the year. Krisman gave up three earned runs on eight hits and recorded four strikeouts. Ed Draper came in to close the game in his 20th appearance of the year. He faced two batters and retired both of them to end the game.
Andy Parsill had one of his best games of the year at the plate going a perfect 4-of-4 with one run scored. Zach Williams was close behind with a 3-of-4 performance and led the team with three RBI. Derek Shomon then went 2-of-4 with two RBI. Angel Cisneros added the other RBI for Judson. Tony Testin had two hits and one RBI for St. Xavier and Jayson Koehn took the loss but struck out nine Judson batters.
After two scoreless innings, St. Xavier struck first with one run in the third inning. Judson had a hard time facing Koehn in the first four innings as they only produced one hit. It was not until the fifth inning that Judson broke through with three hits and one run in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game.
Parsill started off the inning with a double and ended up on third by a throwing error from right field. After Giovanni Cantwell lined out to the shortstop, Williams laid down the perfect bunt to second base and beat the throw as pinch runner Nick Norris scored to tie the game. Judson had runners on first and third with only one out but did not find a way to take the lead.
The tie was only for a short amount of time as St. Xavier connected for one run in the top of sixth for a 2-1 advantage. They then added another run in the top of the seventh to make it 3-1.
At this point, Judson broke the silence of their bats from the past six games and put six runs on the board in the final two innings at-bat. Judson scored three runs in the seventh and three runs in the third for the 7-3 win.
In the seventh inning, Williams singled in the first of three runs to trim St. Xavier's lead to one, 3-2, as Parsill crossed the plate. Three batters later, with the bases loaded and no outs, Cisneros picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice that went sour as Shomon made it to second on a St. Xavier error. Both Williams and Cantwell scored on that play to take the lead, 4-3. Judson never gave up the lead after that.
In the eighth inning, Judson added three insurance runs for the four-run lead. With two outs, Judson put three runs on the board. The first two batters of the inning ended in outs and then Parsill singled through the left side to start the rally. Two batters later, Williams singled, again, as Norris made it 5-3. Shomon, who was the very next batter, looped a single through the left side as both Williams and Cantwell touched home plate for the four-run lead.
Krisman faced three batters in the top of the ninth getting only one out and left runners on first and third when Draper entered. Draper, who leads the CCAC with appearances and saves, came in and retired the next two batters with a fly out and a ground out to end the game.
St. Xavier, who had won 16 out of their last 18 games and 14 games in a row, is now two games behind St. Francis for the CCAC crown and Judson is in fourth place five games back. Judson is just one game behind Olivet Nazarene for third place entering the final CCAC series of the year. The second through fifth place teams play in the CCAC Tournament for the final spot in the NAIA National Tournament First Round series.
Judson will host Purdue-North Central in the final home games of the year on Thursday, May 6th, in a double header at 1:00 p.m.
