BOURBONNAIS, Ill. - Erupting for 16 hits and 12 runs and continuing to stay in front of the CCAC, the Judson University baseball team held off Olivet Nazarene (14-10-1/5-4), 12-9. Judson had a 12-3 lead after five innings before Olivet chipped away at the lead. Judson is now 20-10 and 10-2 in the CCAC and has won 11 of their last 13 games. With the win, too, Judson sweeps the entire CCAC series from Olivet winning all three games.
Stefan Alinkas went six innings for the win to improve to 2-2 on the year. He had three strikeouts while giving up just two earned runs on six hits. Kevin Carmody, Kyle Murphy, and Ed Draper all worked one inning each.
Five players for Judson had two or more hits as Nate Rohl went 4-of-5 with one RBI and three runs scored. Matt McHenry and Giovanni Cantwell both had three hits and Johnny Amann and Levi Pippenger had two hits. Pippenger led the team with four RBI while Amann had a home run for three RBI.
Olivet Nazarene picked up a one run lead in the bottom of the first inning only to see Judson score nine runs in the next two innings for the eight-run lead. Judson was spotted five runs in the second and four in the third.
In the second inning, Cantwell brought in the first run of the game with a single up the middle to score McHenry. Two batters later Pippenger gave Judson the lead for good with a single through the left side as Rohl crossed the plate. Amann then stepped to the plate and whacked his fourth home run of the year with a three-run shot over the right center field fence.
Adding four more runs in the third, Judson made it 9-1. McHenry doubled in Williams for the first run of the inning and a 6-1 advantage which was the first of three straight hits to score runs. Following McHenry was Rohl who singled through the left side of the field and brought in McHenry. Two batters later, Pippenger had the bases loaded and came through with a double to left field that had Cantwell and Rohl touch home plate.
Judson finished their scoring in the fifth inning with three runs. McHenry and Rohl started the inning with two straight singles followed by a Cantwell's second double of the game as McHenry scored for the third time in the game. Gary Capolino proceeded with a groundout as Rohl made the trek home for the 11th run. Pipppenger recorded his fourth RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to centerfield bringing in Cantwell for the final run of the game.
Olivet Nazarene did not quit as they put up two runs in the fifth, one in the seventh, four in the eighth, and one in the ninth to make it a game. The runs were too late, though, as Judson finished off the final inning with Ed Draper as he just gave up one run in six batters faced.
Judson will now travel to Chicago, Ill., on Tuesday, April 6th, to face Robert Morris in a double header at 5:00 p.m.
