
Elgin, Ill. – Down five at the half, #22 Aquinas College (1-0) made a 16-5 run in the first six minutes of the second half to take the lead and move onto a 69-64 win over Judson University. Judson had a lead as large as six in the game.
Steffan Williams (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and DeWayne Robinson (Memphis, Tenn.) led JU with 14 points a piece. Both Chris Oates (Steamwood, Ill.) and Ilija Bojanic (Podgorica, Montenegro) added 12 points. Justen Boyd (Batavia, Ill.) had eight assists. Aquinas was led by John Lierman’s 24 points.
With just under a minute to go in the game, JU was down by two points, 66-64, when a foul was called on Judson that led to a technical foul. AC’s Jordan Torres missed his second free throw and then on the ensuing rebound JU’s Robinson was called for a foul. In that short time, a brief scuffle broke out and JU received a technical foul. AC hit two of their next four free throws to take a 68-64 lead. JU then missed two shots and two free throws in the final 47 seconds when trying to tie the game.
AC jumped out to a nine-point lead in the first seven minutes of the game, 20-11, only to see JU venture on a 13-4 run to tie the game at 24 on a William’s jumper. By the 5:42 marc, AC had moved back in front by five points, 31-26, but yet again JU went on a run. In just two minutes, JU swung the game to their advantage on a 10-0 run for a 36-31 lead. The Eagles then finished the half with a five-point lead, 39-34, heading into the locker room.
It was the opening minutes of the second half that was the difference as AC made 16-5 run to take the lead, 50-43. The Saints never relinquished the lead again. JU cut the lead to one, twice, but could never regain the lead. AC was up by nine, 54-45, with 12:03 left when JU started a 10-2 run to come within one, 56-55. AC responded by hitting their next three shots to push their lead back to eight, 63-55. JU then kept their cool and went on for the 69-64 win.
JU shot 42% from the floor but only 47% (9-of-19) from the free throw line. AC finished shooting 43% from the floor, 50% from thee-point land, and 70% from the stripe. JU also was out rebounded, 40-28, but had more steals, 8-2. JU also forced 14 turnovers.
Judson will be in action next Saturday as they travel to Iowa to face Ashford College at 3:00 p.m.
