MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - Outscoring #9 Cardinal Stritch University, 11-2, in the final five minutes of the game, Judson University captured the 2010 CCAC Tournament Championship, 70-65, to break the Wolves 19-game winning streak. Judson was facing a four-point deficit, 63-59, when they went on the run as Ben Rayhorn scored eight of the 11 points. The CCAC Tournament Championship is Judson's second in three years as they won the tournament in 2008. This was also the third time the two teams met this season as Cardinal Stritch won the two regular season meetings. Judson is now 17-12 on the year and on a seven game winning streak.
The first half and second half endings mirrored each other as Judson came back from being down eight points in the first half on an 11-1 run in the final 5:51. Judson was down eight, 31-23, with 5:51 when they made their run to take a two-point halftime lead, 34-32. Then, in the second half, Judson was down four with 4:53 left when they finished with the 11-2 run.
Rayhorn, who is averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds the past four games, finished with 27 points and seven rebounds to lead all scorers. Jim Kuban added 13 points and Landon Skinner had 10 points. Anthony Ahlers also grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds for Judson. Kody Braddix led the Wolves with 16 points.
With 8:54 left in the game, Cardinal Stritch had a six-point lead, 55-49. Judson whittled the lead down to two, three times, before the Wolves went up by four, 63-59, with 4:53 remaining. Edwards started the 11-2 run at the 4:06 mark on a jumper to cut the lead to two, 63-61. Cardinal Stritch's Trey Triplett, who averages 18 points per game, recorded his first point of the game with a free throw at the 2:54 mark as he went 1-of-2. Just 10 seconds later, Rayhorn netted his first of eight points in the run by hitting two free throws to come within one, 64-63. The Wolves kept extended their lead to two, 65-63, as Navjot Singh made 1-of-2 free throws with 2:28 left in the game. With 2:15 left, Rayhorn collected his 22nd point of the night on a jumper to tie the game at 65.
Braddix, who hit key shots all night for Cardinal Stritch, missed a jumper to take the lead with 1:52 left as Skinner grabbed the rebound and gave it Rayhorn. Once again, Rayhorn came through as he was fouled and stepped to the line for two shots that he swooshed home to put Judson in front for good, 67-65. The next 1:20 was spent in missed jumpers by both teams and two turnovers. Cardinal Stritch missed three jumpers in that span that would have tied or given them the lead. With 16 seconds left in the game, Rayhorn stole the ball from Cardinal Stritch's Brandon D'Amico and was fouled. Rayhorn went to the line to finish off a 6-of-6 performance in the run for a four-point lead, 69-65. After a three-point miss by Cardinal Stritch, Ahlers grabbed his 10th rebound and was fouled. He made 1-of-2 from the line for the five-point win.
The first half was just as intense as each team had single digit leads. Judson's largest lead was four while Cardinal Stritch had an eight-point lead. The first half ended the same way as the second half for Cardinal Stritch as Judson went on a run to take the halftime lead, 34-32. With 5:51 left in the half, Cardinal Stritch had an eight-point lead, 31-23, but Judson's defense did not allow another bucket. Brandon D'Amico made one free throw with 3:04 left in the half to keep a four-point lead, 32-28. In the last 5:51, Judson went on an 11-1 run to take the two-point lead into the half, 34-32. Again in the run, Rayhorn had eight of the 11 points scored.
Judson finished shooting 40% on the game and was 25% from the three-point line while making 87% of their free throws. Cardinal Stritch shot only 39% from the floor, 21% from beyond the arc, and 72% from the stripe. Judson out rebounded Cardinal Stritch, 42-29, and had three blocks. The defense was a key in the win, too, with three blocks. Judson also held Cardinal Stritch's leading scorer, Trey Triplett, to just one point, too.
Judson will now wait to see where they are seeded in the NAIA Division II National Tournament as they receive the automatic bid.
