ELGIN, Ill. - Leading from start to finish combined with a hot start from Ben Rayhorn, Judson University finished off their last home game of the season, 88-73, over Trinity Christian in the CCAC Tournament quarterfinal game. Judson will now be playing for their second CCAC Tournament Championship in three years.
Rayhorn, who scored 12 of the first 22 points in eight minutes, led Judson with his fifth double-double of the year grabbing 15 rebounds and scoring 29 points. He has three double-doubles in the last four games and is averaging 19.5 points per game and 10.1 rebounds. Josh Edwards also lit up the nets tonight hitting five three pointers and going 6-of-6 from the free throw line for 23 points. Landon Skinner then added 14 points. Will Bruinsma led Trinity Christian with 19 points.
Shooting out of the gates with something to prove, Judson took control of the game from the beginning. In the first four and half minutes, Judson had a 13-point lead, 17-4, as Rayhorn had 12 of the 17 points. Three minutes later, Judson had their largest lead of the first half, 22-8, at the 12:24 mark on Edward's first three-pointer of the game.
After the quick start and Judson started cooling off, Trinity Christian made their move. Over a nine minute span, the Trolls ate away at Judson's 14-point lead and had it down to six, 32-26 with 3:26 left. That was an 18-10 run as it ended with a Bruinsma three-pointer. Judson then finished out the half on a 10-7 run for a nine-point advantage, 42-33. It looked like Judson was going to finish with a 12-point lead at the half but Trinity Christian's Jamie King stole the ball with three seconds left and then threw up a three-point shot to bring the lead back down to nine.
Edwards had the hot hand to begin the second half for Judson as he scored nine points, all three-pointers, in the first four minutes of the half on a 13-9 run. His fourth three-pointer of the game came at the 16:51 mark to give Judson the 13-point lead, 55-42. Trinity Christian then slowed the tempo down, again, over the next six minutes. They posted a 17-8 run to put a scare in the Eagles coming within four, 63-59, with just over 10 minutes left in the game.
Trinity Christian kept within 10 points in the next two minutes only to see Judson's surging offense pick back up. Only up by five, 68-63, at the 7:58 mark, Judson went on a 14-5 run in six minutes for their largest lead of the game, 17 points, 82-65. In that run, Anthony Ahlers had a dunk that kept the momentum going. Only up by seven , Skinner grabbed a defensive rebound and then gave it up to Ahlers down the floor for the massive dunk to put Judson up by nine, 72-63 at the 6:38 mark. Trinity Christian did not recover after the run as Judson advanced with the 15-point win.
Judson had an exceptional night shooting from the floor making 51% of their shots. They also shot 50% from beyond the arc and made 81% of their free throws. They held Trinity Christian to just 36% from the floor, 24% from three-point land, and 73% from the stripe. Trinity Christian made their first 14 free throws but finished 5-of-12 after that point. Judson forced 11 turnovers but had seven blocks in the game with Ahlers recording three.
