ELGIN, Ill. - Just missing a triple-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists, Jim Kuban guided Judson University (12-12/8-2) to an 83-62 CCAC win over Calumet College (10-17/3-6). Kuban, combined with Josh Edwards' 23 points, helped Judson back to .500 for only the second time this season.
It was only Kuban's second career double-double at Judson with 12 points and 10 rebounds and just one assist shy of the triple-double. Edwards led all scorers with 23 points and then Ben Rayhorn provided 16 points and Landon Skinner 12 points. Skinner is now just 23 points shy of 1,000 career points at Judson in only two years. Wilfredo Escobar had 22 points for Calumet.
Calumet started the game on fire scoring the first seven points of the game. Just over two minutes into the game, three different players had scored for Calumet. Over the next seven minutes, Judson slowly put climbed back into the game with an 18-3 run to take an eight-point lead, 18-10. They never relinquished the lead again.
After Calumet scored in the first two minutes, they did not make a basket again until the 12:57 mark. By that time, Judson had a two-point lead, 11-9. Judson scored nine straight points to start the run as four different players scored in Josh Weber, Rayhorn, Skinner, and Kuban. It was a Skinner layup at the 15:03 mark that put Judson in front, 8-7. Judson extended their lead to 20, 39-19, with just 1:30 left in the half on a Michael Wood layup. Judson took a 19-point lead into the half, 39-20.
Judson only got hotter in the second half improving their shooting by 13%. They shot 43% in the first half and then made 56% of their shots in the second half. They took their largest lead of 24 at the 11:59 mark, 61-37, on an Edwards' three-pointer assisted by Kuban. Calumet did come within 13, 47-34, with 14:50 to go but did not come any closer.
Judson finished shooting 50% on the game and made 26% of their shots from three-point range and 72% from the stripe. They held Calumet to 30% shooting from the floor, 20% from beyond the arc, and 78% from the stripe.
Judson will take on Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, Ill., on Saturday, February 13th, at 3:00 p.m.
